The Department of Agriculture’s Black Economic Empowerment requirements (BEE) for farmers’ applications to export fresh produce under the Economic Partnership Agreement with the United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland, and the Competition Commission’s report on competitiveness in fresh produce markets, create extreme uncertainty and confusion among farmers and has a damning impact on food security. The department’s BEE requirements are extremely harmful, unconstitutional and inconsistent with international trade agreements. Saai corresponds with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to make the governments, that are parties to the agreement, aware of the content of the WTO’s rules regarding racial discrimination and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Further complaints may arise from this.
Germany’s meat and dairy exports outside the EU face severe restrictions after the country’s first case of the livestock disease foot-and-mouth was confirmed on Friday, the country’s agriculture ministry said. German authorities confirmed the country’s first outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in nearly 40 years in a herd of water buffalo on the outskirts of Berlin. Foot-and-mouth disease causes fever and mouth blisters in cloven-hoofed ruminants such as cattle, swine, sheep and goats and in past decades has required major slaughtering campaigns to eradicate. Measures to contain the highly infectious disease, which poses no danger to humans, are being implemented, German authorities said.

South Africa has been under constant threat of suspension from Agoa for more than two years because its chumminess with Russia, China and Iran – and its hostility towards Israel – have been deemed, mainly by Republicans, though also significant Democrats, to be a threat to US foreign policy and national security interests, which would violate eligibility for Agoa. Global climate finance funds could bridge this gap, strengthening food security for billions of people. Unfortunately, we didn’t seize this opportunity at COP29 to fully deliver the finance we know is needed by developing countries. Although negotiators missed the mark on producing a financial commitment large enough to trigger a significant wave of investments to support smallholder farmers, there remains a crucial opportunity to quickly disburse funds already pledged. We are in a tricky crop season. At its start, we expected a recovery from the 2023-24 season characterised by the El Niño induced drought damage. Indeed, various regions of South Africa received much-needed rains in October, permitting the start of the summer grains and oilseeds planting and a recovery in the grazing veld. READ MORE

Ramaphosa promises to tackle South Africa’s new crisis – could be worse than load shedding -President Cyril Ramaphosa has earmarked addressing South Africa’s water crisis as a top priority for government in 2025, likening the looming crisis to the crippling power shortages that brought the country’s economy to its knees.
China’s annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are approximately 13 billion metric tons—the largest in the world. (Reuters, 2025) • Namibia’s annual GHG emissions are around 10.6 million metric tons—a mere 0.08% of China’s total. (Our World in Data)
Transnet should prioritise four segments of its business to better facilitate logistics for the supply chain industry: the possible outsourcing of tender processes to promote procurement, the rehiring of skilled personnel, avoiding political interference and substantially improving port performance.
Anders as verlede jaar ís daar vanjaar bloutong-entstof in die Vrystaat beskikbaar, maar produsente moet gou spring, aangesien veral Onderstepoort Biologiese Produkte (OBP) se voorraad beperk is.
A joint effort involving the public and private sectors, learning institutions and communities is needed to ensure SA’s children grow into well-rounded, skilled adults ready for the jobs of tomorrow.
With the new year now well underway, leaders in the agricultural sector are calling for an acceleration of land reform and inclusive funding that directly addresses the needs of farmers. As the sector grapples with the aftermath of a tough 2024, there is a growing sense of urgency for change and action.
