The Cederberg region, a popular destination attracting over 70 000 visitors annually, showcases a significant opportunity for sustainable development through tea tourism, particularly focusing on our native rooibos. Most of the region’s 57 000 residents live in rural settings, and tourism is a critical part of their livelihood, contributing more than half of their net income. By integrating tea tourism, we are looking at creating unique, culturally rich tourism experiences that leverage existing agricultural practices and the region’s natural beauty. “Rooibos tea is an exceptional South African product that has captivated the global market, reaching over 30 countries. It is celebrated for its unique flavour, numerous health benefits and caffeine-free properties. Rooibos has successfully been integrated into various products, from cosmetics to culinary flavourings. This versatility speaks to its appeal as a wellness product.

The data released last week by the Crop Estimates Committee showed mild upward adjustments in the crop size from last month’s figures. South Africa’s 2023-24 summer grains and oilseed harvest is estimated at 16 million tonnes, up 1% from last month.  This is not a cause for celebration. The figure does not change the reality that we have been through a difficult season of El Niño-induced drought and heatwave in February and March that weighed on the summer grains and oilseed harvest in various regions of the country. The estimated harvest of 16 million tonnes is down 20% from the 2022-23 production season.  A closer look at the data shows that white and yellow maize harvest could be 6.4 million tonnes (up 2% month-on-month) and 6.9 million tonnes (roughly unchanged from last month). These revisions place the total maize production estimate at 13.3 million tonnes (up 1% month-on-month).  When viewed annually, white maize harvest is down 25%, with yellow maize down 13% from the 2022-23 season. The expected harvest of 13.3 million tonnes is down 19% from the 2022-23 season.

Agribusinesses in Africa’s seed markets have made significant strides. South Africa is the leader in Africa for genetically modified food. After South Africa, Nigeria is now the second country in Africa to permit the sale of genetically modified corn. However, Ghana’s GMO food situation is quite erratic. The war is losing, even with CSOs’ combined efforts. The use of genetic modification in food production methods is gradually increasing. Genetically modified cowpeas, for instance, require clearance from the National Varietal Release and Registration Committee, the Food and Drugs Authority, and the National Biosafety Authority before they can be sold.

About 50% of the world's chocolate originates from cacao trees in the West Africa countries of Ivory Coast and Ghana. The damaging virus is attacking cacao trees in Ghana, resulting in harvest losses of between 15 and 50%. Grains end mixed Friday but higher for the week led by wheat.  Darren Frye, Water Street Solutions, says the wheat market has been rallying on U.S. and global weather and crop concerns.Soybeans have also consolidated under the highs set back on the day of the USDA Prospective Plantings Report and may not be able to retest those areas with the weak export pace.  "We also need to get bean oil on board which is hanging out at its lows.  We also need to see Conab and USDA estimates come together on Brazil.  Without direction that market will continue to drift and see fund selling with the funds still short  READ MORE

CMS-listed species in Africa have shown an average decrease of 27% in abundance between 1970 and 2017. But not only abundance matters – sometimes even losing individuals within a population of migratory species poses a considerable risk, especially for long-lived animals (like elephants) that rely on social learning and collective memory to successfully navigate key corridors. READ MORE

May 1 will greet motorists with mixed news, with increases in petrol prices but a cut in diesel prices. The department of mineral resources and energy announced both grades of petrol, 93 and 95, will increase by 37c/l at midnight, while the wholesale price of 0.05% sulphur diesel will drop by 30c/l and 0.005% sulphur diesel by 36c/l . The price of paraffin will decrease 25c/l . The Central Energy Fund, which adjusts fuel prices on the first Wednesday of every month, attributed the changes to increased international product prices for petrol and decreased prices for diesel during the period under review. The rand depreciated against the dollar from R18.85 to R18.90 over the same period, it said.

From Wednesday, the following fuel prices will apply:

Inland

  • Petrol 95 ULP - R25.49
  • Petrol 93 ULP - R25.15
  • Diesel 0.05% - R22.15
  • Diesel 0.005% - R22.23

Coast

  • Petrol 95 ULP - R24.70
  • Petrol 93 ULP - R24.36
  • Diesel 0.05% - R21.36
  • Diesel 0.005% - R21.48

Today, digital agriculture stands at the forefront of transforming the farming landscape. Recognized by the USDA as pivotal, it addresses the myriad challenges agriculture faces worldwide — from escalating production costs and climate change impacts to labor shortages. At its core, digital agriculture uses a suite of advanced tools to revolutionize field management and data-informed decision-making:

Primary agriculture contributes around 2,5% to South Africa’s gross domestic product , which is a relatively small proportion considering that agricultural land represents almost 80% of the country’s total land area. However, the sector’s overall contribution, including the value chain, is substantially higher, contributing 10,3% in 2023 (up from 7,8% in 2021).

Case IH is unveiling the FieldOps app, a new all-in-one mobile and web solution purposefully designed for farmers to connect, view and manage their operation. FieldOps provides real-time access to agronomic, machine, and operational data, connecting farmers to their machines, fields, teams and partners and empowering them with actionable insights.

A R1.2m fund agreement between the Citrus Growers Association: Grower Development Company (CGA-GDC) and the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) has been signed to enhance the commercial prospects of Black citrus producers in the Eastern Cape. This 18-month agreement is designed to support their commercial activities and reduce barriers to entering the export market.

“Die Nasionale Arabierperdkampioenskap is een van die vele glansgeleenthede wat deel uitmaak van vanjaar se landbouprogram tydens die Bloemskou.”Die kampioenskap, wat deur die Suid-Afrikaanse Arabierperdgenootskap gereël word, is ’n hoogtepunt vir liefhebbers en telers van hierdie pragtige diere dwarsoor Suid-Afrika.

Primary agriculture contributes around 2,5% to South Africa’s gross domestic product , which is a relatively small proportion considering that agricultural land represents almost 80% of the country’s total land area.

The first shipments of new South African citrus have begun. Eddy Kreukniet of Exsa Europe and Niek van Rijsbergen visited those cultivation areas last week. "There have been no issues with wind, rain, or storms, so for now, this season's runway looks clear," says Eddy.

The decision by most farmers countrywide to destock their cattle and other small livestock has spiked an increase in the country’s live cattle export market, which saw over 57 415 cattle exported since the start of the year.
