International trade is at the heart of South Africa's agricultural success. For this reason, any disruptive legislative and logistical constraints to exports are set to constrain the sector’s growth, and as such, a deep cause for concern. Equally, the differences in the interpretation of various export-related legislation by industry leaders versus regulators could have adverse effects on the sector or dent sentiment. Therefore it is critical that the meaning and intent of regulation and policy be clearly articulated and communicated in a way that is commonly understood.
The wheat harvest figure is unchanged from last month, at 2, 2 million tonnes. Still, this projected overall harvest is 2% up from the last season. Broadly, the provinces behind the current robust national wheat harvest forecast are the Western Cape (53% of the overall harvest), Northern Cape, Free State and Limpopo. Admittedly, while the Northern Cape and Free State are still amongst the leading wheat producers, their expected harvest is less than the 2022/23 season. The expected large harvest in the Western Cape and Limpopo overshadows the decline in harvest in other provinces. There are also likely decent wheat harvests in other provinces such as KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and North West.
Plowing helps with weed control as overturning soil kills growing weeds and prepares the soil for planting with a pass of various tractor-pulled implements. You may notice, however, that some farm fields are not plowed, yet corn or other crops are grown in them without first overturning the soil. This new form of agriculture is becoming more common as positive results are shared among growers. And a focus on soil health is a major part of this growing movement. READ MORE
For farmers, cover crops aren’t a new invention. They have been used for hundreds of years, although the practice declined in the 20th century. That is changing, owing to the recent development of a class of cover crops with multiple benefits – as a feedstock for lower carbon fuels and as a way of preventing soil erosion and enriching the soil between food crops. Over the course of the Earth’s 4.5-billion-year history, the climate has changed a lot. This is true. But the rapid warming we’re seeing now can't be explained by natural cycles of warming and cooling. The kind of changes that would normally happen over hundreds of thousands of years are happening in decades. Global temperatures are now at their highest since records began. In fact, 17 of the 18 warmest years on record have all taken place since 2001. READ MORE
Opium cultivation areas expanded most in Myanmar’s border regions in northern Shan state, followed by Chin and Kachin states, as yield expanded by 16% to 22.9kg per hectare because of more sophisticated farming practices, the UN report said. READ MORE

The scourge of animal and crop diseases in South Africa has been a rising concern in recent years, laying bare the biosecurity vulnerabilities in the country’s agricultural sector. Biosecurity is essentially an integrated system in which all stakeholders in the sector should participate to protect against the spread of infectious diseases to crops, livestock, and poultry.

New findings share how prescribed fire and no-till management impact soil microbes.-Using no-till and prescribed fire management are two potential ways to manage crop residue. Both practices help keep organic matter and nitrogen in the soil. However, research was needed to understand how these two practices can affect long-term soil health.
Focus on the structure & function of soil aggregates Soil aggregates are defined as stable structures composed of mineral particles (sand, silt and clay particles), that can be consideres as indicators of the physiochemical and biological properties of the soil.
