Solank daar mense is, moet daar kos wees.

The BFAP noted that the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation’s (FAO’s) global Food Price Index for September had recorded a y-o-y drop of 10.7% (although sugar prices had risen), and a m-o-m decrease of 0.1% (although sugar prices again went up, as did those for cereals). Against the dollar, South Africa’s currency saw a y-o-y depreciation of 8.1% last month, from R17.56:$1.00 in September last year to R18.98:$1.00. The food categories with the highest y-o-y inflation in South Africa last month were sugar-rich foods (at 17.7%), vegetables (15.3%), dairy and eggs (11.2%) and bread and cereals (9.2%). However, for all four of these categories, the y-o-y inflation rate in September was lower than in August. Next came fish (8.7%), NAB (8.6%), fruit (6.7%) and meat (3.8%).

Cienth Pty Ltd has applied for a permit to explore some 4,200ha of farmland in the Overberg Highlands for gold, silver and tin ore. It would then be able to apply for an exclusive 30-year mining permit covering the area, located just outside Napier on the southern tip of the African continent. The region’s grape growers and wine producers fear that productive farmland will be destroyed, food security will be threatened and jobs will be lost. ‘The consequences of this application being approved are too terrible to contemplate,’ said Bruce Jack, one of South Africa’s most renowned winemakers, who owns The Drift Estate in the region. ‘Unfortunately, things are stacked against us, and time is of the essence,’ he added. ‘Whoever is behind this application is determined to succeed and has substantial resources, both financial and otherwise.’ Cienth Pty Ltd does not have a website, and it is unclear who is behind the company. It has applied to South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources & Energy for the permit.

READ MORE  -

Pollution, industrial development, agricultural intensification, land use change, and other damaging human activities are degrading and diminishing watersheds, rivers, and lakes.  Between 2014 and 2018, the Theewaterskloof reservoir, one of the largest water supply systems near Cape Town in South Africa, dropped to 27% of its full capacity. For some conservation and welfare groups, in fact, shooting high-profile or other species is abhorrent, and they worry the practice is damaging South Africa’s economy, even though the hunting industry may generate a rough spending stimulus of about US$180-million (R3.4-billion) a year.  READ MORE

A single container of eggs costs about R1-million and importers have little to no assurance that they will receive the dispensation needed to sell the eggs should a shipment exceed the allowed 40-day sell-by period. No importer wants to risk a financial loss of this size – importers are simply not willing to take that chance.

In March 2020, government increased the duties on bone-in chicken from 37% to 62% and boneless chicken from 12% to 42%, with an undertaking to review this after three years, which expired in March this year. The duties were never reviewed.

The Association of Meat Importers and Exporters (AMIE) has welcomed Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Ebrahim Patel’s directive to the Import and Export Control Regime, administered by the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (Itac), to consider creating a temporary rebate on import duties for chicken as a shortage in the market looms.

The South African berry industry exports berries to the value of around R3 billion annually. Blueberries are one of the berries in high demand. Every year, blueberry farmers record higher levels of production, but every year the supply still seems to come up short. At the same time the price of blueberries is decreasing after hitting a peak a few years ago.

The South African Reserve Bank deputy governor Kuben Naidoo has handed in his resignation before his second 5 year tenure was meant to end in March of 2025. He has a 6 months cooling period.
