South Africa's horticultural exports, particularly fruits and nuts, have driven agricultural growth for 15 years, with a 13.3% increase in export value to US$2.7 billion in the first half of 2025 from US$2.3 billion in 2024. The EU, including the UK, is the largest market (38%, US$1.03 billion), followed by Asia (26%, US$714 million), the UK (14%, US$376 million), the Americas (9%, US$235 million), and Africa (6%, US$169 million). The Netherlands dominates EU imports (75%), while the UAE (28%) and China (13%) lead in Asia. The USA (52%) and Canada (47%) are key in the Americas, and Nigeria (17%) tops African markets. Key exports include apples (US$371 million), lemons (US$278 million), and mandarins (US$229 million).

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s praise for Zimbabwe’s land reform during a speech at the Zimbabwe Agricultural Show on August 29, 2025, has sparked backlash from South African agricultural leaders. Ramaphosa highlighted Zimbabwe’s efforts to address colonial-era land ownership and promote black farmers through irrigation, mechanization, and support, framing it as vital for historical redress and food security. However, critics argue Zimbabwe’s land reform led to economic collapse and food insecurity, making it an unsuitable model for South Africa.

NEWS  COMMENTARY-
Bennie van Zyl’s analysis of South African agriculture highlights a sector under siege, with each production factor—land, labor, capital, mechanization, and entrepreneurship—facing significant challenges. The uncertainty surrounding property rights, exacerbated by policies like the Expropriation Act, stifles long-term investment in land, a critical asset for food security. A poorly educated workforce, coupled with rising minimum wages and rampant farm crimes, drives up labor costs, while high input prices and inaccessible loans, without the subsidies seen in developed nations, squeeze capital. Bureaucratic hurdles and insufficient R&D support hinder entrepreneurial innovation, despite farmers’ adoption of technologies like precision agriculture. Mechanization offers some relief by replacing labor but requires investment that many farmers can’t afford. This paints a picture of an industry resilient yet hamstrung by a hostile policy environment, urgently needing market-based reforms to bolster property rights, reduce red tape, and enhance global competitiveness.
In addressing South Africa’s Parliament on September 2, 2025,  Wandile Sihlobo aims to clarify the structure of the agricultural sector, debunking pervasive “zombie ideas” that misrepresent its reality, as popularized by economist Paul Krugman. Common misconceptions include the notions that South Africa has 40,000 commercial farmers, 2.5 million small-scale farmers, and 2.75 million subsistence farmers. Drawing on research with Professor Johann Kirsten and data from Stats SA’s 2022 Population Census, the speaker corrects these figures: South Africa has 284,283 commercial farming households, with only 40,122 VAT-registered (mostly white-owned) enterprises, of which 46% are micro-enterprises and family farms. Additionally, 2.2 million households engage in subsistence farming or gardening. Black Africans dominate in household numbers engaged in farming, though not necessarily in income or production. These facts dismantle outdated narratives, emphasizing the need for evidence-based policymaking to reflect the sector’s diversity and scale, avoiding policies driven by political agendas that undermine the reality of South African agriculture.

According to F Curve Agri, urea prices dropped 5.4% week-on-week to R8,953 per ton (ex-warehouse) by September 4, 2025, driven by India’s latest urea tender, which saw a low offer of $465/t CFR (west coast), equating to a Middle East price of ~$450/t FOB. The tender attracted 5.6 million tons of offers, ~10% of annual global urea trade, indicating an oversupplied market. India, needing ~4 million tons by year-end, may hold another tender, with price trends hinging on the volume secured. Middle East prices fell to the low $440s/t FOB, influenced by the tender and spot trades below $440/t. China’s unconfirmed 1 million ton export allowance adds downward pressure, with its export window closing soon. Brazil’s urea prices dipped to $450/t CFR, and Iranian prices struggled at $405/t FOB. Ammonium sulphate and nitrate prices also declined due to weak demand and urea competition, while ammonia prices rose to $540/t CFR in Tampa due to supply constraints.

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s praise for Zimbabwe’s land reform during a speech at the Zimbabwe Agricultural Show on August 29, 2025, has sparked backlash from South African agricultural leaders.

The recent data for August also paints a mixed picture. For example, the tractor sales are up 22% y/y, with 700 units sold. Meanwhile, the combine harvester sales were flat, with five units sold. The soft sales in combine harvester sales are not a significant concern given the higher volume of sales in the past few months.
Agri SA,, vows to use all its resources to protect private property rights, which are the backbone of South Africa’s farming sector. CEO Johann Kotzé says land is critical as collateral for loans, with agriculture’s debt-to-GDP ratio at about 50%. Any threat to these rights risks food security and the sustainability of farming.

South Africa is focusing on making its agricultural sector stronger and more resilient while expanding its trade markets. Deputy Minister Narend Singh, speaking at Vietnam’s 80th Independence Day celebration in Pretoria on September 2, 2025, said the country has opened new markets and secured trade agreements for products like citrus.

The Competition Commission’s first Cost of Living Report, released on Wednesday, reveals that South African households, particularly low-income families, are under significant financial strain due to rising costs of essentials outpacing the general inflation rate of 28% over the past five years. Electricity prices have surged by 68%, water by 50%, primary education by 37%, and secondary education by 42%, forcing families to prioritize basic needs. Food staples like brown bread, maize meal, and eggs face widening price margins, with the farm-to-producer price spread for brown bread reaching 77%, though retail margins have dropped to 15% as retailers absorb some producer price increases. Transport costs, such as minibus taxi fares, remain high despite falling fuel prices. Low-income households, spending over 40% of their income on essentials, are hit hardest. Chief Economist James Hodge stressed the need to identify anti-competitive practices driving these price hikes to address the cost-of-living crisis.
