South Africa’s agricultural export sector has seen significant growth since the early 2000s, rising from $2 billion to a record $13.7 billion in 2024, making it the 32nd largest global agricultural exporter and the only African country in the top 40. This success, driven by collaboration between the private sector, organized agriculture, academia, and government, has been bolstered by improved productivity, quality, and access to diverse markets, including the African continent (40% of Q2 2025 exports), the EU (22%), Asia and the Middle East (21%), and the Americas (7%). In Q2 2025, agricultural exports reached $3.71 billion, a 10% increase from Q2 2024, driven by higher volumes and better prices for products like citrus, apples, pears, maize, wine, nuts, and more. Improved port efficiency has also supported this growth.
A World Animal Protection investigation reveals that traders in Lomé, Togo, are using TikTok to openly advertise and sell endangered wildlife, including white-bellied pangolins, fueling a global conservation crisis. The platform’s lack of regulation enables this illegal trade, threatening species survival and bypassing enforcement mechanisms.Key findings from 80 TikTok videos (November 2022–April 2024) include: Over 3,500 smoked animal carcasses from 27 species, many protected under national and international laws. Over 130 endangered white-bellied pangolins, banned from commercial trade under CITES. Videos garnered nearly 1.8 million views, 53,000 likes, and 6,000 shares, with one pangolin video viewed over 216,000 times. Stock theft and crop/fruit theft are growing challenges in South Africa’s agricultural sector, with limited data available. According to Statistics South Africa’s 2024/25 Governance, Public Safety, and Justice Survey, over 61,000 goats, 37,947 cattle, and 36,486 poultry were stolen. Nearly half of these thefts occurred in kraals or outside houses, with 40.7% in fields/grazing lands. Goats (39.8%) and cattle (24.6%) were the most targeted.

Outstanding articles of the week. Summary of some news Headlines in the Farming and Agriculture media.
The key technology that enabled the creation of ChatGPT was a network architecture called the Transformer, proposed by researchers from Google and the University of Toronto. Before the Transformer, AI relied on statistical models and hard-coded [PK1] rules, meaning they were not easily generalisable to different tasks. The Transformer overcame this hindrance and enabled AI to understand context, making it more scalable with compute (processing power). READ MORE -
This growth is largely driven by urban population expansion, the increasing emphasis on food security, and the rising demand for sustainable agricultural practices. Vertical farming, a controlled environment agriculture method, uses techniques like hydroponics, aeroponics, and aquaponics to cultivate crops efficiently indoors. These systems offer year-round production and maximize resource conservation by using less water and land. READ MORE -
Importantly, the government officials in South Africa, particularly the regulators on export-related matters in the Department of Agriculture, should also have a shared sense of urgency for the promotion of exports. They should work collaboratively to assist exporting businesses rather than creating more bureaucratic hindrances, while the global interest is established. READ MORE

Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.

Since 1994, South Africa's agricultural value has more than doubled. Two significant catalysts are at the centre of this progress: the expansion of export markets, which creates a demand for products; the early adoption of high-yielding seed varieties in crops; the improvement of animal genetics; and the use of agrochemicals to nurture the sector. South Africa was especially embracing technological advancement in ways that much of the African continent was not, thus setting the country apart from much of Africa in terms of its yields. This technological embrace primarily explains higher crop yields in South Africa compared to some of the neighbouring African countries with even better climatic conditions. A case in point is South Africa's embrace of genetically modified crops, whose adoption in the early 2000s saw maize and soybean yields improve notably over time, thus keeping the country a net exporter and boosting food availability domestically.

Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager (Trim) has completed the adjudication process to select 11 new Train Operating Companies (Tocs) for third-party access to South Africa’s state-owned rail network, as announced by Transport Minister Barbara Creecy.
After solid export activity in the first quarter of the year, SA’s agricultural exports totalled $3.71bn in the second quarter of 2025, up 10% from the same period in 2024. This is a function of higher volumes of various product exports and better commodity prices.
