The National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC) reports that feed costs, primarily maize and soybeans, constitute 70% of poultry production expenses, significantly impacting the industry when prices spike. In 2023/24, the poultry sector contributed R68.8 billion to South Africa’s agricultural economy, a 172.2% increase from 2010/11, but faces challenges from volatile input costs. Yellow maize prices hit a decade-high above R5,000 per ton in December 2024, while soybean production value surged 727.7% to R14.9 billion from R1.8 billion in 2010/11.

South Africa, a net MDM importer, faced market panic as Brazil is a key supplier.
