Ivory Coast, the world’s biggest cocoa producer, could take measures to make the product more expensive if tariffs proposed by US President Donald Trump go into effect, the West African country’s agriculture minister said on Thursday. The Trump administration last week announced tariffs of 21%, the highest in West Africa, on Ivory Coast as part of higher targeted duties on dozens of countries.Ivory Coast exports between 200,000 and 300,000 metric tons of cocoa to the US each year, according to data from the Coffee and Cocoa Council (CCC).

China’s total new loan commitments to Africa in 2022 were only $995.5m, against a high of $28.5bn in 2016.  The UAE is growing at 3.6% against the backdrop of a global average of 3%. KPMG says the UAE will be growing at 6.7% in 2025 with diversification, increased oil output and booming tourism. “Africa has 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land. Agriculture accounts for 35% of Africa’s GDP and employs more Africans than any other sector. According to the African Development Bank, Africa’s food and agriculture market could increase from $280bn a year in 2023 to $1-trillion by 2030.”

CRA MEDIA - Actions speak louder than words. So, focus on winning through your actions rather than trying to win an argument. You need to think long-term if you want to maintain power. Tokara, a leading South African olive oil producer, faced significant challenges due to heavy rains from October to November, which disrupted flowering on its mountain-slope farm, impacting its harvest. Despite this, Tokara remains dedicated to producing high-quality extra virgin olive oil, earning a Gold Award at the 2024 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition.

The need for market diversification for South African exports, especially fruit, which used to have duty-free access to the US, is still very much on the table. This is despite the 90-day reprieve that US President Donald Trump announced on April 9, a week after he unleashed trade tumult on the world through a raft of “reciprocal” tariffs announced for some 75 countries, including South Africa.]

The World Food Programme (WFP) reported that 343 million people faced acute food insecurity in 2024, a 10% rise from 2023. Amid this escalating crisis, WFP is grappling with a 40% funding cut for 2025, endangering 58 million people across 28 critical operations with the loss of vital food aid

Our VIEWPOINT of the Weekend.

The South African Table Grape Industry (SATI) has expressed serious concern over the potential impact of new U.S. tariffs on South African agricultural exports, particularly table grapes. "South Africa prides itself on having an export-oriented agricultural sector, and the USA is one of the vital markets for certain commodities, including table grapes," said Mecia Petersen, CEO of SATI.

The South African Avocado Growers Association (SAAGA) held an event in George to discuss the expansion of avocado production in regions like George, Helderberg Basin, and Riebeeck Kasteel, focusing on industry prospects for local farmers. The next SAAGA study group session is set for May 6, 2025.

More than half the world’s plant-derived energy intake comes from just three crops: rice, wheat and maize. These crops, like most land plants, live in an evolutionarily ancient partnership with a certain type of fungus, called arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.
