Delegates to the 2025 Grain SA congress gave their unanimous endorsement for the establishment of an agricultural technical training facility at the organisation’s Nampo facility near Bothaville in the Free State. The need for such a facility was tabled in 2022, and after careful consideration, the green light was given by the delegates attending the 2025 congress. The facility will come into operation in 2026. According to Dr Tobias Doyer, Grain SA CEO, all the role players that were needed to get an enterprise such as this training facility off the ground had come on board. This included, among others, the state, academics and agricultural businesses. “The Nampo grounds provide the ideal position for Nampo Tech, as the facility will be known. It is situated centrally in the country, which makes it possible for students to attend classes in off seasons,” he said. Nampo Tech students will qualify as full members of Grain SA, but without voting rights.

Tongaat Hulett, which remains in business rescue, has invested R460m in off-season infrastructure maintenance to ensure its main facilities run smoothly ahead of the sugar season, set to begin in April and continue into early May. The harvesting season, which kicks off in late autumn or early winter when crops are fully mature, signals the start of processing them into sugar. The maintenance was completed over the past few months at the Maidstone, Amatikulu and Felixton mills, the central refinery in Durban and the Voermol animal feeds facility. “As the 2025/26 sugar season begins, we look forward to working closely with our growers, employees and industry partners to build a more resilient and competitive sugar sector.

In Australia, more than 51% of organic waste – including garden and food waste from households – is recovered and processed. Much of it is turned into compost. However, every kilogram of compost we sampled in our study contained thousands of tiny pieces of plastic, invisible to the naked eye. They come from a range of potential sources, including compostable waste bags used by households to store food scraps. Without swift and effective action, composting may become an environmental crisis, rather than a solution READ MORE
Without proper policy engagement of this challenge, the sector face the risk of more waves of misconceptions about its export-driven growth drive while many South Africans are impoverished. The importance of smart farming practices in optimising fertiliser use and increasing agricultural yields is clear throughout South Africa. By adopting technologies such as precision agriculture, farmers can monitor crop health and soil conditions more effectively, leading to tailored fertilisation strategies that minimise waste. There are many benefits of data-driven decision-making, which not only boosts productivity but also promotes sustainable farming practices. This approach is crucial for addressing food security challenges and environmental concerns associated with excessive fertiliser use.
