Millions of hectares of rural land in South Africa are still registered to apartheid-era entities, including Bantustan homelands and the native affairs ministry. Despite being administered by the government, the formal transfer of ownership to relevant departments has been delayed since democracy began in 1994. In response to a parliamentary inquiry, then-Minister Thoko Didiza confirmed that the land must be vested under the national government before it can be transferred to communities under the proposed Communal Land Tenure Bill. The land is currently protected under the Interim Protection of Informal Land Rights Act (IPILRA).

The South African Treasury is negotiating a new $1.5-billion (R27-billion) development policy loan from the World Bank, which is currently in the early stages of approval. The loan is expected to be assessed and negotiated before a final decision is made by 15 April for the World Bank’s 2025 fiscal year, ending in June. If approved, this loan will significantly contribute to Treasury’s strategy of increasing international financing. World Bank loans are offered at lower interest rates compared to other financing options.

“Without Agoa, South Africa would lose its competitive edge in the US market. Agoa keeps our citrus tariff‐free, allowing us to compete with southern hemisphere rivals such as Peru and Chile – countries that already benefit from lower costs and duty‐free access. If removed, we risk losing thousands of rural jobs and over a billion rands in export revenue, as currently 35,000 local jobs and an additional 20,000 jobs in the US depend on these exports.” READ MORE

As global demand for high-quality meat increases, the debate over grass-fed versus feedlot beef has gained momentum. In South Africa, the beef industry plays a vital role in both local consumption and international trade. South Africa meat is very popular all over the world. Grass-fed beef is becoming increasingly popular among health-conscious consumers due to its superior nutritional profile. It contains higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and essential nutrients, while being free from harmful antibiotics and growth hormones commonly found in feedlot-raised cattle. Our VIEWPOINT of the Weekend.

The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development notes Botswana's decision to lift the ban on vegetable exports from South Africa. This development affects local farmers and agribusinesses in the North West province, which shares a border with Botswana and maintains agricultural trade relations.

The Finance Minister is likely to impose a new Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) levy to fund the new R100 billion Transformation Fund touted by President Cyril Ramaphosa. This is feedback from Old Mutual’s head of tax, Nazrien Kader, who outlined her expectations for the minister’s Budget Speech on 19 February

The global onion market is currently facing significant challenges, with oversupply, fluctuating demand, and price instability affecting multiple regions. In Europe, high stock levels continue to weigh on prices, with sluggish sales reported in France, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands.

Minister of Agriculture and DA leader John Steenhuisen denies that controversial agriculture union leader Theo de Jager is an "official or unofficial" advisor to him. De Jager, a key proponent of the narrative that Afrikaner farmers are being targeted by the government, previously praised former US President Donald Trump for his stance on South Africa.

Under AGOA, South Africa exports approximately 110,415 tonnes of citrus to the U.S. each year. Industry leaders warn that if access is revoked, it could have serious economic implications for local farmers and exporters. Citrus growers are now urging the government to engage in diplomatic discussions with U.S. trade representatives to prevent potential disruptions.

Verlede Januarie is 358 trekker-eenhede verkoop.

The Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, is expanding BEE in the agricultural sector. This is harmful and adds significant risk to South Africa’s already strained international trade relations. AgriBEE’s express objective is to “enforce compliance” “to the transformation programme of the government.” It seeks to make B-BBEE “a qualification and legal requirement for Government” when issuing licences, permits, water rights and other concessions, and when disposing of state assets.
