The current version of Agoa, and SA benefiting therefrom, is set to expire by September, although the agreement can be renewed before that date. One possible change could be the length of the agreement, should it be renewed. Select African governments and businesses have requested that the 10-year period be increased to 15 or more years. For its part, the outgoing Biden administration endorsed a 16-year extension. Should Agoa be renewed but SA not form part of the new version, this would not mean the end of all US-SA trade, diplomatic and other relations. Select sectors in the country, specifically agriculture, automotive, mining and manufacturing, will be those hurt most.
Annelize Crosby, head of legal intelligence at Agbiz, said that while the Expropriation Bill explicitly allowed for expropriation without compensation, it should still adhere to constitutional provisions, specifically the requirement for compensation to be just and equitable. “This legislation needs to comply with the provisions of the Constitution and specifically the requirement that compensation must be just and equitable,” she said. Crosby added expropriation should be a measure of last resort, with no compensation being offered only in exceptional circumstances that could be fully justified. “If there are going to be attempts to now expropriate property, farming property, on a large scale with offers of no compensation, that will obviously send a negative [message to] the sector, which could have repercussions,” she said. Crosby addressed misconceptions about the scope of the Expropriation Bill: “It is important to note that the Expropriation Bill is only the tool through which the expropriation takes place.

The Expropriation Bill allows the government to expropriate land and other property without compensation under certain circumstances, ostensibly to address historical injustices related to land ownership and promote equitable economic development. Critics, however, argue that the bill undermines property rights, discourages investment, and could lead to economic instability, echoing concerns seen in other nations that pursued similar policies. Farmers whose land is expropriated for land reform will have to fight corrupt officials in court at their own expense, while these officials have unlimited access to taxpayers' money. Saai has costly experience in court cases where the state has been reprimanded by the courts for maladministration and abuse, yet with no consequences for the corrupt cadres in government departments. Wandile Sihlobo, chief economist at Agbiz, spoke about the importance of ensuring fairness in the application of the law. The cost of litigation for landowners who resisted expropriation remained a key concern. While mediation was part of the process, unresolved disputes often led to court battles.“Although the new Expropriation Act now explicitly allows R nil compensation to be awarded in certain circumstances, the end result must be just and equitable,” Sihlobo said.He added that ‘R nil compensation’ involved a careful calculation of all relevant factors to strike a balance between the public interest and the rights of affected landowners.
Africa is no longer a 'tomorrow' destination but a 'now' nation, ripe for investment and growth. I'd like to present an exciting investment opportunity in renewable energy for agricultural production and food sustainability in Nigeria, a country poised for significant growth.

China is diversifying its agricultural imports to reduce reliance on the US, anticipating potential trade frictions under the Trump administration. Central and South American countries, with surplus agricultural products such as grains, oilseeds, red meat, wine, and nuts, are emerging as key beneficiaries of this shift. Conversely, Africa has seen minimal benefit due to low agricultural productivity.

Central and South Americans seem to be on the way to becoming the major winners. They have a surplus of agricultural products that China imports, such as grains, oilseeds, red meat, wine, and nuts. The chart below clearly illustrates what is happening with China's agricultural imports. The African continent has not benefitted much.

In Africa maize does well when intercropped with beans or other legumes. The intercropped legumes should be sown at the time of first weeding in order not to crowd out the young maize plants. Since maize is a heavy feeder and takes considerable nutrients out of the soil, it can only be grown continuously on the richest soils or when heavily fertilized.
Ramaphosa made sure that he strategically placed all the DA Ministers in departments that are directly responsible for policy areas that clash with the DA’s policy offering. Siviwe implement the BELA Act and now he is making Dean implement the Expropriation of Land Act. What does he want from Agriculture?
TAKE NOTE
At the World Economic Forum in Davos, President Cyril Ramaphosa encouraged investors by highlighting South Africa's stability and openness to business. However, shortly after, he signed the controversial Expropriation Bill into law, enabling state authorities at all levels to expropriate land for public purposes or in the public interest, while emphasizing that such actions must not be arbitrary.Property rights are essential for economic stability and growth, as they provide security for investment and participation in markets. Critics argue that undermining these rights deters innovation, trade, and capital accumulation, putting social stability and investor confidence at risk. Historical examples like Zimbabwe and Venezuela, where property expropriation led to economic collapse, fuel fears of a similar outcome in South Africa.Despite the government's assurance of fairness, investors perceive the Expropriation Bill as a threat to their security, discouraging foreign investment. The decision to enact the bill has drawn parallels with Zimbabwe's economic failure following land expropriation without compensation, raising concerns about South Africa's economic future.
