Pres.
Brazil and Vietnam are major producers of coffee beans. We import from both, and both have serious weather challenges – drought and heavy rains in the case of Vietnam, which have affected production. If one looks at South Africa's coffee imports by volume, we imported, on average, about 23 921 tonnes per annum in the past five years. Brazil and Vietnam accounted for 54% of South Africa's coffee imports. Other suppliers of coffee to South Africa include Uganda (8% of SA's imports), Tanzania (7%), Colombia (4%), Guatemala (4%), Ethiopia (3%), and Honduras (3%).
With food demand set to rise across Africa and globally, SA’s agricultural sector cannot afford to lag behind. Mechanisation and digital agriculture are not merely optional but essential for building resilience and competitiveness. To achieve this, collaboration is key. Farmers, financial institutions and policymakers must work together to create an enabling environment for mechanisation — through affordable financing, training programmes and supportive policies. Mechanisation offers SA the tools to balance the urgent need for food security with sustainable resource management. By embracing available technologies the sector can transform itself into a powerhouse capable of meeting future challenges, preserving natural ecosystems and driving economic growth.

The nitrogen market has been lifted by a buoyant urea sector. We finished 2025 with an Indian urea tender that was somewhat unexpected and helped lift prices as a result. That tender secured an incredibly small volume of less than 200,000t when there was talk of the Indians taking up to 1.5 million tons if offered. What transpired was that the Indians did their usual thing of countering all the offers by bidding the lowest offer price received under the tender. Usually this secures decent volumes but on this occasion, most players rejected the counter. This left the Indians with small volumes and sent a message throughout the market that producers and traders are confident of achieving higher prices. READ MORE

The integration of various plant species within a farming ecosystem, commonly referred to as intercropping, presents numerous agronomic advantages. This practice is characterized by the cultivation of different but complementary plants in close proximity, allowing for better exploitation of resources and enhanced ecological balances. Recent studies emphasize that intercropping can lead to significant benefits such as reduced soil erosion, effective weed suppression, increased nitrogen fixation, and positive impacts on pollinator populations. When combined with the right climatic conditions, this dynamic cultivation strategy can lead to substantial benefits in terms of land use efficiency and overall productivity. READ MORE
People without any knowledge can use artificial intelligence (AI) to produce more profitable cucumbers than the most experienced growers. This was shown in an experiment that Wageningen University & Research (WUR) in the Netherlands conducted last year in a greenhouse complex at their experimental farm in Bleiswijk. READ MORE
