Just that " ONE" step ahead-

Despite pressure from the MK Party and EFF, Deputy President Paul Mashatile says land reform will take place under the current constitutional scheme as expressed in the Expropriation Bill, which allows expropriation with nil compensation under certain circumstances. After being passed in March, the bill is awaiting President Cyril Ramaphosa's signature, and Mashatile told the National Assembly on Thursday that the president could find his pen soon. He did not, however, rule out a future amendment to Section 25 of the Constitution to allow expropriation without compensation, but wished whoever attempted this good luck, as such an amendment had failed to pass in the Sixth Parliament.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, tourism’s direct and indirect contribution to South Africa’s GDP was 8.2% in 2023. It is estimated to rise to 8.8% by the end of 2024 and to reach 10.4% by 2030.  “South Africa welcomed more than 5.8-million tourists in the first eight months of 2024, marking a 7% increase when compared to the same period in 2023, while 21.5-million trips were taken by South Africans to explore the country between January and July 2024.Chinese tourists made more than 100-million outbound trips in 2023, according to the department, but South Africa only received 93,000 arrivals from this potentially lucrative market. Tourists from India accounted for just 3.9% of all international arrivals in the country, and those from China made up only 1.8% of arrivals.

Technological improvement is a primary catalyst for the growth of the South African agricultural sector. Thus, South Africa must continue to spend money on research and development to support the long-term growth of the agricultural sector. However, in recent years, the country seems to be spending less on research, which is worrying, especially during increased climate change risks and the need for even greater spending on research. Consider the work done jointly by the University of Pretoria and the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) for the international Agricultural Science and Technology Indicators in 2014, which estimated that South Africa in that year spent about R2.5 billion on agricultural research – by public, university and private sector agencies.

La Niña to neutral seasons (as expected for the 2024/2025 season) are not known for extended dry and hot conditions, as with an El Niño. There will be a so-called midsummer drought or dry spell in late December or January, but it is not expected to last for more than two weeks – although it may last longer over the eastern parts in February and March 2025. The development of tropical cyclones in the Indian Ocean, towards the east coast of Africa, from January to March is of concern and something to be aware of. Tropical cyclones are responsible for heavy rain over the ocean and even over the east coast of Africa. However, they are also responsible for dry and hot conditions over the interior of Southern Africa.  The cyclone season is usually from January to March, with tropical cyclones lasting for about ten to 20 days, which coincides with the sensitive stages of crop development. This development is independent from El Niño or La Niña.

The Citrus Growers’ Association’s latest release from CEO Justin Chadwick highlights a challenging citrus season for South African growers. Despite high hopes, the industry faced several obstacles, resulting in lower-than-expected output. Chadwick’s statement begins by addressing the industry’s mixed emotions, noting a sigh of relief but lingering questions about what “normal” looks like in the field. “There were high hopes for a record season as the Variety Focus Groups (VFG) estimated a crop of just shy of 182 million cartons,” he said. “Well ahead of the Vision 260 goal and a big increase over the 2023 final volume of 165 million cartons.”

Big petrol and diesel price win for South Africa -Producer Price Inflation (PPI) moderated from 2.8% in August to just 1% in September, marking the lowest outcome since June 2020 – largely thanks to much lower petrol and diesel prices this year.

The Loskop Valley in Limpopo Province kicks off its grape season in fine fettle. Last week a hail shower hit one farm, but the effect will be limited. In general, the European grape market is in an excellent hungry place for the start of the 2024/2025 grape season.

Fedgroup has partnered with Verdant Orchards and the Danish development finance institution, IFU, to co-fund a $40-million agricultural investment in sub-Saharan Africa. This initiative focuses on citrus and avocado production, marking Fedgroup's inaugural ventures into Mozambique and Zambia, while also expanding its operations within South Africa.

The African Development Bank Group has approved a $75 million financing package to support Export Trading Group (ETG), a Mauritius-based conglomerate with extensive operations across Africa. ETG boasts a diverse portfolio spanning agricultural inputs, logistics, merchandising and processing, supply chain optimization, digital transformation, and energy.

Grapefruit still seems to be too bitter for mostly younger people. The overall sales trend shows a decline in grapefruit consumption as it is mostly enjoyed by older people. South Africa's grapefruit season has just ended. A lot more fruit was sent to China, where there was good demand.

The Rand has remained stable over the past week, trading at R17.67 against the US dollar. Our inflation rate has dropped below 4% for the first time in three years, coming in at 3.8% in September. This makes the possibility of a further interest rate cut in November more likely. However, there is some speculation that the US may not be as aggressive in cutting rates, which could affect our rates early next year.

Transnet has reiterated its stance about demurrage fees, claiming that it neither charges for the late return of containers by transporters, nor is it responsible for delay-related costs imposed by shipping lines on harbour carriers and the clients they represent.

Brazil is expected to produce a record soybean crop in 2024-25 of 161 million tonnes, a 6% increase from last season, according to a report from the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Many farmers are well acquainted with the ‘big three” nutrients such as nitrogen(N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), but sulphur often gets overlooked despite being just as essential for crop growth. Sulphur was not initially acknowledged as an essential nutrient for crops due to traditional farming practices and the effects of industrial pollution, which often provided sufficient sulphur.

Africa faces a severe food waste crisis, losing about a third of its agricultural produce annually. In South Africa alone, 30% of the 31 million tonnes of food produced each year never reaches consumers, resulting in losses of R61.5 billion, or 2.1% of GDP.
