The Commission for Gender Equality has found women in rural areas in some provinces still face discriminatory and patriarchal challenges that pose huge barriers in gaining access to land. This is revealed in a report titled, “Exploring Barriers to Women’s Access to Communal Land in Selected Provinces of SA”, released on Thursday. It attributes the barriers to procedural and cost disparities, gender identity and sexual orientation and expression, and age and marital status, among other aspects. The report said that in cases where married women can apply for communal land, the permission to occupy or lease is issued in the husband’s name, reflecting the cultural belief that the land belongs to the family, as the family name is based on the husband’s name.
Red meat industries have been particularly affected, as foot-and-mouth outbreaks forced farmers to limit the movement of their animals and various countries cut off SA beef imports. In 2022, beef exports fell below the prior five-year average, dropping 16% year on year. They recovered slightly in 2023, up 3%. Concern about foot-and-mouth also led some countries to cut off SA wool exports, most notably China, which accounts for more than two-thirds of SA’s wool exports. China banned SA wool imports intermittently between 2022 and 2023. As a result, these exports fell 19% year on year in 2022.

In much of the Southern African region, maize could be considered a "political crop" because of its importance as a staple food and the vast extent of farmers' involvement in its production. When there are droughts, we see the pain through reduced supplies, increased consumer prices, and distressed farming villages.
Looking at U.S. supplies of wheat, the Aug. 12 USDA report increased the all-wheat U.S. yield by a modest 0.4 bushels per acre, raising it to 52.2 bushels per acre. This increase in yield was offset by lower harvested acres for all wheat. The USDA lowered harvested acres by 900,000 acres. The July report had harvested acres at 38.8 million, and the August report instead showed the lower value of 37.9 million acres.
South Africa has the potential to become a world leader in the red meat industry. The country boasts outstanding producers and world-class genetics within its herds. The role players in the local industry – the Red Meat Producers’ Organisation, the National Emergent Red Meat Producers’ Organisation, the South African Feedlot Association, and the Red Meat Abattoir Association – are well aware of this potential.
South Africa’s water infrastructure is rapidly deteriorating, with experts estimating that around R1 trillion is needed to avert a complete collapse. Nowhere is this more prevalent than in the rapid decline in safe drinking water in South Africa, where wastewater treatment plants fail to perform to their required level.
Leopards are a so-called “umbrella species” for wider biodiversity conservation. Conserving the habitats and prey species of leopards benefits a multitude of other species at the same time. For example, the leopard’s mountainous habitat in the Western Cape is also a crucial water catchment area for urban settlements and agriculture. Leopards require very large areas of natural habitat, so by protecting the leopards, the whole landscape benefits – and so do we!
