In reality, the operator will always continue to control the work site from aboard it, but there will undoubtedly be periods in which he will have very little to do . Hence the idea of Claas to allow operators to carry out other activities in addition to those specifically related to the work in progress by redesigning the cabins in such a way as to transform them into real mobile offices.
The Claas research centre developed two working hypotheses and two proposals were then exhibited in Hannover last November.
A bit of a cabin and a bit of a gym
The research project “Cab 4.0 – OnField” involves machine management implemented using the latest technologies, the same ones that will be used to eliminate the steering wheel in favor of a joystick and monitor the external environment using cameras. The images and more generally all the data that the operator wants to check will be made available on head-up displays and monitors while the human-machine interface will be based on keyboards and mice as well as voice commands. The operator will also be kept under observation by an “eye tracker” system, an eye detector capable of monitoring the state of fatigue of the person sitting at the wheel, even suggesting recovery actions if signs of tiredness arise.

In this case, by pressing a button, the operator will be able to change the position of the driving seat from “work mode” to “relax mode” which allows for light gymnastic exercises to energize the body, movements that will be suggested by a head-up display together with useful information for relaxing and reducing stress. Rotated instead into “office” mode, the seat will allow for better control of the on-board displays and to position a portable tablet with trackpad between the armrests to allow the operator to carry out office work. He will be able to check email, for example, carry out research on the Internet, plan future activities or prepare the documentation necessary to certify the work or invoice it to third parties.
Transparent side uprights
“Cab 4.0” actually represents a major evolution of current living spaces, unlike “Cab10Future” which instead presents itself as the cabin of the future, a work space made even more comfortable by a seat that rotates up to 60 degrees in both directions, by intelligent and self-regulating lighting, by large monitors and by a concept of the compartment aimed at ensuring the operator total and direct visibility of the work areas.
For this purpose, the side pillars are expected to be transparent, the steering wheel will be eliminated in favor of specific joysticks and a set of cameras will display the entire 360-degree work area on the monitors, the same area that a system of high-power LED lights will illuminate as if it were daylight in the event of advanced work at night or in precarious light conditions. Both compartments are obviously actively isolated from the carriages and frames, are automatically air-conditioned and protected by active filters from liquid, solid or gaseous infiltrations.
