The SA government plans to fast-track the use of vaccines to fight bird flu as virulent strains of the disease sweep across SA's poultry sector. Making the announcement in a statement on Monday night, the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DLARRD) said it had met with vaccine registration regulators and reached an agreement "that the registration of vaccine will be fast-tracked". The department said it has also assisted in importing fertile eggs for the broiler industry. "(A) similar request for the table eggs will be considered if received." But Gauteng is hardest hit by a new local, virulent H7 strain, which according to the South African Poultry Association (SAPA), is not found anywhere else in the world. H7 outbreaks were also being reported in Limpopo, Northwest, Free State and Mpumalanga. It estimated that more than 1.4 million birds had been culled or killed by the H7 strain. The department said as of 21 September, the country was dealing with a total of 50 outbreaks of H7 and 10 outbreaks involving the H5 avian influenza strain. A total of 37 of the H7 cases were in Gauteng. Astral Foods, the country's largest poultry producer, warned late last week of a shortage of table eggs and poultry meat in the coming months.
The South African government is lobbying both the Republicans and Democrats for an extension to the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) although the US Congress has not yet set a date for its renewal. Trade and Industry Minister Ebrahim Patel told joint parliamentary committees on Tuesday that the government wants the preferential trade agreement to be extended as it had benefitted the country by raising export earnings, and would boost investor confidence. Agoa has been in force since 2000 and covers more than 5 000 export products. It has already been extended three times.
However, the 2023/24 global wheat production prospects need a closer look as we continue to see reports of poor yields in the EU, Russia, Canada, Ukraine, Australia, the UK and Kazakhstan. The drier weather conditions over the past few months are the primary reason for the decline in yields in these countries. Consequently, the latest report from the International Grains Council places the 2023/24 global wheat production at 783 million tonnes, down 3% from the previous season. Still, this would be the second-largest global wheat harvest on record. In line with these downward revisions in production estimates and increased consumption, the 2023/24 global wheat stocks could fall 7% y/y to 263 million tonnes. READ MORE -
Africa can be a world leader in food system transformation that also alleviates poverty and protects the environment, but it will take collaborative and co-ordinated work, argue Angela Churie Kallhauge, Exec Vice-President, Environmental Defense Fund, Ishmael Sunga, CEO, Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Unions and Serah Makka, Exec Director, ONE Africa. When a continent with 65% of the world’s arable land struggles to feed its 1.4bn people, we know something is wrong and that the African and global food systems need a rethink. READ MORE
Inflation on food and non-alcoholic beverages declined for the fifth consecutive month, to 8.0% in August 2023. This brings it in line with levels last observed between May 2022 and June 2022 and follows an 11-month period of sustained increases from May 2022 to March 2023. From January 2022 t April 2023 the gap between CPI Headline inflation and inflation on food and non-alcoholic beverages increased from 0.0 to 7.1 percentage points, recovering to a 3.2 percentage points gap in August 2023. Feedlot calves begin their lives on pasture with the cow that produced them. They're weaned after six to nine months, then grazed a bit more on pasture. They're then "finished" for about 120 days on high-energy corn and other grains in a feedlot, gaining weight fast and creating that fat-marbled beef that consumers like. At about 14 to 18 months of age, they are sent to slaughter. (One downside of the feedlot system, as we've reported, is that a diet of corn can lead to liver abscesses in cattle, which is why animals who eat it receive antibiotics as part of their feed.)
Global agricultural industry is on the verge of modernization with the increasing need for crop production from the resultant demand from end use sectors such food commodities, horticulture, textiles, etc.
South Africa Beef- This continuous upward cost pressure requires innovative and new ways to improve capital allocation and utilisation to increase efficiencies in the business. The absence of such initiatives could weaken the sustainability of agri-business for the next generations. We have, for example, experienced commodity and other inputs to increase more than 30%.
China has come to crave milk. Demand that had been steadily growing has spiked further after doctors touted its health benefits amid the coronavirus pandemic and dairy firms across the country have embarked on a farm-building frenzy.
Egypt is in talks with Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADBC) for a loan facility that would finance wheat purchases from Kazakhstan, according to Egypt's Supply Minister on Sunday.
In just five years we have gone from an oversupply of fossil fuels to a critical shortage of the one fuel we need for everything — diesel. Diesel has been reliably powering trucks, heavy machinery, farming and mining for more than a century. Its high-energy density and ease of transport have made it the fuel of choice for everything from shipping to the military to backup power generation.
We are three weeks into the start of South Africa's 2023/24 summer crop production season. The uncertainty regarding the intensity of the El Niño weather event, as well as the possible higher temperatures and lower-than-normal rainfall that this could bring, is still a concern.
Renowned economist Dawie Roodt said there was a change in the South African Reserve Bank’s (SARB’s) interest rate outlook, with another increase on the cards this year. On Thursday, the SARB’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to keep South Africa’s repo rate stable at 8.25% for the second meeting in a row.
