China last month suffered its biggest fall in exports for more than three years, official data showed Tuesday, as the world's second-largest economy is battered by sluggish global demand and a domestic slowdown. The data will likely ramp up calls for leaders to do more to revive growth, having laid out a series of stimulus measures in recent weeks focusing on consumers and the troubled property sector. Sales of Chinese products to foreign markets sank 14.5 percent on-year last month, a third consecutive drop, according to the customs authority. The decline was bigger than expected and the heaviest since a 17.2 percent plunge in January-February 2020, when the economy came to a standstill in the early weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Humans have physically reconfigured half of the world's land to grow just eight staple crops: maize (corn), soy, wheat, rice, cassava, sorghum, sweet potato and potato. They account for the vast majority of calories that people around the world consume. As global population rises, there's pressure to expand production even further. Many experts argue that further expanding modern industrialized agriculture – which relies heavily on synthetic fertilizer, chemical pesticides and high-yield seeds – isn’t the right way to feed a growing world population. In their view, this approach isn’t sustainable ecologically or economically, and farmers and scientists alike feel trapped within this system.

We can only really see El Niño impacts when our summer rainfall comes… in general, there’s a relationship between the state of the ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation) and the South African climate. In general, there’s an established relationship, but it’s kind of statistical because it’s not always a linear relationship. It’s more like, when we have El Niño, ‘this is the historical pattern and general likelihood of an impact’.” READ MORE -

According to the survey, 67% of grocers have discussed ChatGPT in senior-level meetings, 82% see AI as essential for future competitiveness and 59% plan to test an AI solution in 2023. As climate change intensifies, animal diseases are likely to be more prevalent. As such, the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development should consider earmarking a share of their annual budgets for emergency purposes to deal with animal disease outbreaks. These funds should be utilized under strict rules and in concurrence with the National Treasury only in the case of notifiable animal disease outbreaks.  READ MORE
