Even though Africa contributes less than 3% to global warming, the continent is the most vulnerable to climate risks. With dwindling climate finance flows to Africa, it is important to help derisk and remove business barriers to increase private investors’ contributions to climate finance on the continent. Africa will need $2.7-trillion by 2030 to finance its climate change needs.
Farmers in Kansas, the biggest US producer of wheat, are abandoning their crops damaged by severe drought and cold. Some are spraying wheat fields with crop-killing chemicals and claiming insurance payouts in the belief that it is not worth harvesting the little grain that there is, Reuters found on a three-day tour of the state.

Population is expected to increase to over 10 billion by 2050, and whether urban or rural, this population will need food and fiber to meet its basic needs. Combined with the increased consumption of calories and more complex foods, which accompanies income growth in the developing world, it is estimated that agricultural production will need to expand by approximately 70% by 2050.

Water is a critical input for agricultural production and plays an important role in food security. Facial recognition technology isn’t limited to humans. Livestock are now getting their mugs snapped in order to help farmers monitor animal health, increase efficiency and improve traceability. Researchers from the US to Australia are using drones to handle health assessments of cattle from the air, developing a system to recognize the emotional states of farm animals and capturing the identities of cows based on their unique muzzle prints. Soils have deteriorated and plant and animal species are disappearing. Landscapes are degraded and small-scale farmers are struggling. It’s little wonder we’re looking for more sustainable and just ways of growing food and fibre. Regenerative agriculture is one alternative creating a lot of buzz, especially in rich, industrially developed countries. READ MORE
Water is another aspect that various agribusinesses and farmers often raise as a challenge, both from a policy perspective and, more critically, in terms of infrastructure maintenance. There are examples of towns where agribusinesses have had to play a more active role in the water supply. This again takes financial and human capital away from businesses to public service that municipalities should be covering. READ MORE

AfriForum’s farm murder report for the first quarter of 2023 indicates that at least 77 farm attacks, nine of which were murders, took place between January and March this year. The report was made public on 22 May 2023 and focuses on verified farm attacks for the first quarter of 2023. According to AfriForum, this figure is worrying when compared to the first quarter of 2022, during which 80 attacks (including 11 murders) took place. It is clear that there is no significant decrease between these two periods. The report also found that most attacks were in Gauteng, while the second most recorded were in the North West province. The report also emphasises that most of the victims are over the age of 60 and that most attacks took place on Saturdays.
