SA’s financial services sector is panicking over the impact that a potential collapse of the national electricity grid could have on the country’s financial and monetary system. Companies in the asset management, insurance and banking sector have been cenario planning how an Eskom grid collapse could disrupt everything from the execution and settlement of trades on the JSE to money transfers and salary payments. The main fears appear to centre on potential social unrest and a likely plunge in financial market asset prices due to panic selling once the power grid is up and running again after the failure.

Despite various headwinds throughout the year, South Africa’s agriculture exports for 2022 did not decline as much as some feared. Data for the first 11 months of the year shows exports at a cumulative $11.9bn, up 3% from the same period in 2021. Moreover, $11.9bn is the second-largest agriculture exports value on record. When we receive the December exports figure in the coming weeks, it is possible that the 2022 agricultural exports could be just under 2021 levels of $12.4bn or even exceed them.

Load-shedding is disrupting not only irrigation, but also slaughter operations, processing, packing and cold storage of food products. In their efforts to mitigate the impact farmers are expending significant resources on additional fuel as well as rising labour costs due to wasted production time and irregular working hours planned around blackouts.

We need to get to grips with SA being on the edge of a precipice. If, over and above load-shedding and declining service delivery, we start to see steeply increasing food prices, food shortages and the labour-intensive agricultural sector shedding jobs, civil unrest is likely to follow. The National Treasury has warned of that, too. The national economy and balance of trade would also be significantly undermined if SA shed its food self-sufficiency and relied increasingly on imports.

This month South African wine celebrated the 364th year since the industry was born. Almost 132 900 days later it is among the largest in the world, but potential remains to take the industry to a new level of excellence and to position South African wine in the top echelon, where it deserves to be
Approximately 50% of this food loss takes place during harvesting. Processing, packaging, distribution and retail account for a further 45% of wasted food. The remaining 5% of food waste is the responsibility of consumers (WWF Surplus Food Report 2020). Clearly, our efforts to divert food must be directed at the pre-consumer phases.

Africa’s agriculture sector accounts for about 35% of the continent’s gross domestic product, and provides the livelihood of more than 50% of the continent’s population. These shares are more than double those of the world average and much higher than those of any other emerging region.Dependence on agriculture has declined in other emerging regions

Soil degradation is a global problem. A third of the planet’s land is already severely degraded, and soil is being degraded at a speed that threatens the health of the planet and the civilizations that depend on it . Depletion of soil organic carbon (SOC) resulting from extractive agriculture is a key driver of soil degradation .

Pangolins are sentient beings and have a right to a wild life. Pangolins play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystems. It is imperative we take action to protect them before it is too late, said World Animal Protection in a hybrid event held today just a day to World pangolins day celebrated yearly on the 3rd Saturday of February.
