The urgent need to revive South Africa’s domestic capacity for livestock vaccine manufacturing, particularly for highly pathogenic avian influenza, foot-and-mouth disease, and other livestock diseases. The Department of Agriculture’s recent approval for Astral Foods Limited to vaccinate broiler breeding stock against avian influenza is a positive step, following the 2023 outbreak that caused egg shortages and price increases, a situation mirrored in the U.S. in 2025. Flexible regulations are essential to quickly register vaccines for new disease strains to prevent losses and ensure food security. South Africa, a leading African agricultural producer, risks losing this status without investment in vaccine production and biosecurity for animal and plant health. State-owned entities need revitalization, and private South African labs should be involved to boost capacity.
AI in agriculture is evolving from a futuristic concept to a practical tool, focusing on supporting farmers rather than replacing their instincts. According to Arno Hanekom, AI enhances farmers' decision-making by providing data-driven insights from sources like historical crop data, satellite imagery, and weather trends. However, AI solutions must be tailored to individual farms, as generic tools often fall short. Datacentrix promotes a "farming data should be like farming land" philosophy, advocating for intuitive, not prescriptive, AI that aligns with farmers’ needs.
The 2023 Financial and Production Statistics Report by Stats SA highlights a robust performance in South Africa’s agricultural sector, with total income reaching R491.7 billion, a 6.8% increase from R332.0 billion in 2017. Key drivers included animal farming (R186.1 billion, 37.8%), mixed farming (R115.9 billion, 23.6%), and horticulture (R103.5 billion, 21.0%). Agricultural services and fertilizer production grew from 1.1% to 2.5% of total income, though animal farming’s share dropped by 2.4 percentage points. The Western Cape led with R100.9 billion in income, followed by Free State and Gauteng. Employment rose by 0.5% to 770,181 by June 2023, with horticulture employing 311,426 (40.4%), followed by mixed farming and cereals.

Outstanding articles of the week. Summary of some news Headlines in the Farming and Agriculture media.
Driven by the increasing reliance on modern agricultural practices and the growing emphasis on maximizing early-stage plant development. Starter fertilizers are becoming a vital component in crop production systems across the globe as farmers seek efficient and sustainable ways to boost early plant health and maximize overall yield. With rising food demand, shrinking arable land, and growing pressure to optimize every stage of the crop lifecycle, starter fertilizers are taking center stage in precision agriculture. READ MORE

Our youth — many without work or direction — have no respect for elders, values, or the past. Drinking, drag racing, loud music, and violent outbursts are glorified on social media. Young men walk the streets with huge bellies, overweight, beers in hand, braaivleis smoke rising, and Klipdrift bottles nearby. People live on pavements while security guards stand at every corner to protect the wealthy few. 80% of the youth grow up without a Father. Killing your friends after a night out of drinks and braaivleis with your own weapon is normal. READ MORE
Admittedly, South African farmers will only start looking into these prospects with greater intensity in October, when the 2025-26 summer crop season begins. For now, the focus remains on the harvest activities of summer grains, oilseeds, and citrus, among other crops. READ MORE

Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.
