The urgent need to revive South Africa’s domestic capacity for livestock vaccine manufacturing, particularly for highly pathogenic avian influenza, foot-and-mouth disease, and other livestock diseases. The Department of Agriculture’s recent approval for Astral Foods Limited to vaccinate broiler breeding stock against avian influenza is a positive step, following the 2023 outbreak that caused egg shortages and price increases, a situation mirrored in the U.S. in 2025. Flexible regulations are essential to quickly register vaccines for new disease strains to prevent losses and ensure food security. South Africa, a leading African agricultural producer, risks losing this status without investment in vaccine production and biosecurity for animal and plant health. State-owned entities need revitalization, and private South African labs should be involved to boost capacity.

AI in agriculture is evolving from a futuristic concept to a practical tool, focusing on supporting farmers rather than replacing their instincts. According to Arno Hanekom, AI enhances farmers' decision-making by providing data-driven insights from sources like historical crop data, satellite imagery, and weather trends. However, AI solutions must be tailored to individual farms, as generic tools often fall short. Datacentrix promotes a "farming data should be like farming land" philosophy, advocating for intuitive, not prescriptive, AI that aligns with farmers’ needs.

The 2023 Financial and Production Statistics Report by Stats SA highlights a robust performance in South Africa’s agricultural sector, with total income reaching R491.7 billion, a 6.8% increase from R332.0 billion in 2017. Key drivers included animal farming (R186.1 billion, 37.8%), mixed farming (R115.9 billion, 23.6%), and horticulture (R103.5 billion, 21.0%). Agricultural services and fertilizer production grew from 1.1% to 2.5% of total income, though animal farming’s share dropped by 2.4 percentage points.  The Western Cape led with R100.9 billion in income, followed by Free State and Gauteng. Employment rose by 0.5% to 770,181 by June 2023, with horticulture employing 311,426 (40.4%), followed by mixed farming and cereals.

Our youth — many without work or direction — have no respect for elders, values, or the past. Drinking, drag racing, loud music, and violent outbursts are glorified on social media. Young men walk the streets with huge bellies, overweight, beers in hand, braaivleis smoke rising, and Klipdrift bottles nearby. People live on pavements while security guards stand at every corner to protect the wealthy few. 80% of the youth grow up without a Father.  Killing your friends after a night out of drinks and braaivleis with your own weapon is normal. Maize demand in the Southern African region is expected to remain strong in the 2025/2026 marketing year, which started in May (aligning with the 2024/2025 production season). One of the countries that imported the most maize in Southern Africa in the 2024/2025 marketing year was Zimbabwe. The country accounted for 56% of South Africa’s maize exports of 2.3Mt that year.

Chinese authorities are addressing pork market volatility by enforcing restrictions on the speculative practice of ‘refattening’ pigs, where small farmers buy market-ready pigs, add 40–50kg to their weight, and sell them later for higher prices. This practice, prevalent in Guangdong, causes market instability by creating short-term shortages followed by oversupply, leading to significant price swings.

The global container shipping industry is becoming increasingly concentrated, with the latest data showing that shipping alliances, together with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), now control more than 80% of the world’s total container capacity.

Sasol is reinforcing its commitment to South African agriculture through sustainable energy innovations tailored to farmers’ needs. By offering high-performance fuels, advanced lubricants, and renewable diesel options, Sasol helps reduce operational costs, minimise equipment downtime, and support the shift to low-carbon farming.
Geopolitical tensions in oil-producing regions like Iran typically cause short-term oil price spikes, potentially increasing South African fuel prices by 50c per liter in the next month and 20c the following month, before stabilizing or dropping below pre-crisis levels. However, a severe disruption, such as a closure of the Strait of Hormuz (handling 20% of global oil), could push oil prices to $130 per barrel, leading to a R3 per liter fuel hike.

Jaco Burger, managing director of Market Demand Fruits, reports a smooth shipping process for South African citrus despite a general container shortage, with younger shipments arriving due to improved logistics. The 2025 season outlook is favorable, driven by lower stonefruit volumes from Italy, Spain, and Greece, boosting demand for citrus, particularly soft citrus.

Uralchem, one of Russia’s leading fertilizer producers, has announced plans to significantly increase its fertilizer exports to Africa, aiming to reach 5 million metric tons annually by 2030. The company’s CEO, Dmitry Konyaev, outlined the expansion strategy during the ‘Russia-Africa Business Dialogue’ at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) last Thursday.

South African blood oranges, lemons, tangerines, and grapefruit have entered global markets, with mixed pricing and quality outcomes. Other international fruit markets, including cherries, apples, coconuts, durians, and mangosteens, also show varied trends influenced by supply, quality, and consumer preferences.

While Brazil’s avian flu containment offers hope, bureaucratic delays and biosecurity concerns continue to disrupt South Africa’s poultry supply, particularly MDM, threatening affordability, jobs, and food security. Local producers cannot fill the gap, and concerns over US import policies add complexity. Urgent resolution is needed to stabilize the market.
