Africa’s food security and poverty issues are primarily political, requiring actionable policy changes rather than speeches. The WFP’s potential weaknesses highlight the urgency for Africa to drive its agricultural development and re-duce dependence on external aid.  Few Southern African countries (e.g., South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania) produce surplus grains, while others (e.g., Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique) frequently import or rely on WFP aid during crises like droughts or floods, especially between November and March. The WFP is consolidating operations to Nairobi, Kenya, following reduced U.S. funding, which constitutes about half its budget. While the WFP claims continued commitment, funding cuts could impair its ability to support vulnerable communities.

Recent reports of a fifth sluice gate opening at the Vaal Dam due to surging water inflows have heightened fears of flooding and climate-related disasters in South Africa. The devastating September 2023 floods in the Western Cape, which caused over R1.4 billion in agricultural damage, washed away roads, and disrupted electricity for thousands, underscore the growing toll of extreme weather events. Businesses must assess climate risks specific to their operations. The short-term insurance industry plays a critical role by geocoding addresses for precise risk pricing, ensuring sustainable coverage against extreme weather events like floods and droughts. Sectors like agriculture are adopting measures such as drought-tolerant crops, climate-informed planting, and multi-peril crop insurance covering risks like hail and frost. Industrial sectors are encouraged to invest in resilient infrastructure and renewable energy.

Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.

15 Best South Africa News Podcasts

AGRI NEWS NET on NUMBER 7 for the month of March  2025

The numbers tell the story: Audiocast listenership is climbing, and agriculture is no exception. By some estimates, over 100 million people in the U.S. alone are tuning into podcasts, with farmers and ranchers making up a dedicated slice of that pie. Successful ag-focused shows are racking up thousands of downloads per episode, and some are even attracting sponsors eager to reach this engaged audience.

South Africa's consumer food price inflation nudged to 2,2% in March 2025 from 1,9% in the previous month. Increases in the cereal products, meat, fish and other seafood ,fruit and nuts, and vegetables primarily underpinned this mild uptick.

China’s struggling economy may not be able to endure a prolonged trade war with the United States, according to analysts. Arlan Suderman of StoneX Financial says rising debt, low consumer confidence, falling foreign investment, and a recent Fitch downgrade all signal economic weakness. He believes China “may have taken on a battle they can’t afford to fight,” especially under pressure from President Trump’s 125% tariffs on $430 billion in Chinese goods.

The weather patterns coffee farmers relied on for generations are breaking down. While climate change takes the blame, it's largely a self-inflicted cycle of ecological degradation from farming practices. 37% of world's coffee grows on former forest land. The industry has cleared over 2.5 million hectares, four times Delaware's size.

The Limousin Cattle Breeders’ Society of Southern Africa celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025, marking five decades of breeding excellence. Belangrike punte: Krisis ondanks goeie weiding: Limpopo se rooivleisboere sukkel finansieel ondanks voldoende weiding.

TAKE NOTE  -Heavy rainfall of 40 mm or more is forecast until 25 April 2025, increasing flood risks in the Vaal and Bloemhof Dam catchments, where water levels are already high. The Gariep and Vanderkloof Dams, also near capacity, face flood risks if rainfall exceeds expectations. A cut-off low-pressure system will bring rain to central and eastern South Africa until Friday, with clearer weather expected into early May. Further rain is possible in May across regions like the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, and Garden Route. Light precipitation (<5 mm) is forecast for the winter rainfall region around 29 April and 4–5 May, with heavier rain unlikely in May due to summer-like weather patterns. Snow is likely on Lesotho’s mountains and the eastern Drakensberg from 23–24 April, with heavier snowfall possible in early May. Near-freezing temperatures from 29 April to 3 May could cause frost in areas like Zastron, Smithfield, Barkly East, and Molteno, though significant frost damage is expected only in late May. The coldest winter period will be July–August. Wet and cold conditions threaten livestock, particularly newborn lambs and calves, during the autumn lambing season. Persistent rain is damaging fodder production, with some Free State and Northern Cape farmers losing multiple lucerne cuts. Wet conditions, expected to persist for at least two weeks, are shortening the fodder production window before winter.
