The broader poultry industry remains in a state of flux, grappling with a perfect storm of challenges. The impact of HPAI is far-reaching and estimated to have cost the industry a staggering R9bn. his is compounded by high feed costs, which have been worsened by a weak rand and the global demand for raw materials. The sector is also faced with logistical issues, electricity shortages and the increasing competition posed by cheap imported poultry, particularly from Argentina. To mitigate these risks and safeguard the future of the industry, the SA Poultry Association (Sapa) last week called on the government to take immediate action.

Africa, with its vast reserves of fertile yet unused land, abundant workforce, and water resources, has the potential to become a global leader in food production. However, this potential is constrained by critically low fertilizer use, which continues to increase at a worryingly slow rate. At the same time, food security across the continent is deteriorating. The 2024 UN State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report highlights that Africa now has the highest rate of food insecurity globally, with 20,4% of the population – about 298,4 million people – being undernourished. According to the African Development Bank, Africa's food and agriculture market could surge from $280 billion a year to $1 trillion by 2030. To achieve this, Mike Nash, Senior Editor: Fertilizers at Argus Media, says the continent must first overcome significant barriers to fertilizer adoption.

The ruinous legacy of last year’s El Niño still stalks the grain-growing areas of southern Africa, which is in the grip of historic levels of hunger. The rains this summer have been late to the party in much of the region and the long-range forecasts are clouded by uncertainty, raising the spectre of more crop failures at a time when bountiful harvests are desperately needed in the wake of the disastrous season in 2024. The credibility of the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) has come under severe scrutiny amidst revelations of persistent dysfunction and misinformation. For years, the public has been unable to trust critical data, such as inflation figures, crop estimates, financial statistics, and even the prices of food and groceries.

Ethiopian coffee exports to the EU are on the rise, despite the spectrum of the EUDR: it seems that the alerts raised by many about the risk of a collapse of exports from Africa to Europe of coffee and other “colonial” commodities covered by the European Union Deforestation Regulation EUDR), have not (luckily) occurred.

South Africa has the opportunity to step up as a major agricultural exporter to China, especially as China's imports from the U.S. decline due to trade tariffs. While Central and South America are benefiting from this shift, Africa, particularly South Africa, is lagging behind.

While the start of South Africa's 2024-25 crop season was tricky, there remains optimism that farmers likely planted more area than the previous season. The preliminary plantings data released by the Crop Estimates Committee this afternoon shows that South African farmers likely planted 4,45 million hectares of summer grains and oilseeds in the 2024-25 season, up mildly by 0,3% from the previous season.
