NEWS- NUUS EKSKLUSIEF -
Olive growers in South Africa experienced a fruitful harvest, with production volumes reaching their highest in recent years. “The 2024 olive season for South African producers has been very successful,” said Wendy Petersen, chief executive of the SA Olive, an industry association. Olive oil production in South Africa is estimated to have reached 1.6 million liters during the 2023/24 crop year, a significant increase from the 1.2 million liters reported the previous year. Annual production typically fluctuates between 1.5 and two million liters. The high input costs continue to be a significant challenge for our producers. Electricity and input costs remain major obstacles in agriculture, and the olive industry is no exception,” she added, referring to the frequent power outages that have afflicted the country.
South Africa has set the goal of becoming the world’s third-largest raisin producer as it continues to increase plantings and improve efficiency. The ambition comes as new figures from the International Nut & Dried Fruit Council (INC) confirm South Africa’s position as the largest grower in the southern hemisphere, with 89,700 marketable tonnes produced in 2023/24.That puts it comfortably ahead of Chile (57,000 tonnes), Argentina (30,000 tonnes) and Australia (7,309 tonnes).South Africa has seen a steady increase in production since the turn of the century as farmers expand their operations, invest in new technology and cultivars, and adopt more efficient growing techniques. In 2000, South African raisin production was just 38,142 tonnes, but that rose to 50,628 tonnes in 2010 and 85,080 tonnes in 2020.Weather permitting, output is expected to increase again in 2024/25, with healthy vines reported and a crop in the region of 90,000-110,000 tonnes forecast.
There is a noteworthy development in the European Union (EU) and South America. These regions are progressing towards finalising the EU and Mercosur (South America) trade deal. And yes, this has been in the works for some time, but it is moving towards finalising. The deal will remove tariffs on around 90% of trade in goods between the two sides, but primarily over up to roughly 12 years. Agricultural exports from Mercosur will be subject to gradually rising quotas. This agricultural point caught my attention. The EU is one of South Africa's essential agriculture markets, accounting for nearly 20% of SA's agriculture exports. Growing competition from South America in the EU market is something we must watch closely following this deal.

Agriculture, one of humanity’s oldest industries, is undergoing a transformation that’s both rapid and necessary. Faced with challenges like climate change, resource scarcity, and the growing demands of a rising global population, the sector is embracing innovative solutions to secure its future. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the world will need to produce 50% more food by 2050 to meet demand—an ambitious target that requires rethinking traditional farming practices. “Industrial agriculture” is a phrase used to signify “bad,” evoking toxic chemicals, monoculture crops, confined animals, the death of the small family farm and all kinds of images people don’t like to associate with their food. Factory farms are a constant target of environmentalists, documentarians, animal rights activists, spiritual leaders like Pope Francis and the Indian mystic Sadhguru, and leftist politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders. While having eased remarkably in November 2024, grain-related products remain the upside risk to consumer inflation following a poor crop harvest due to the drought. For example, South Africa's 2023-24 maize harvest is estimated at 12,72 million tonnes, down 23% year-year due to the 2024 mid-summer drought. The white maize growing areas were the most affected. This is a staple crop that is also scarce in the world market. Thus, white maize prices remain elevated. READ MORE

Francois wilken
The recent drought, amongst other pre-existing issues, in Southern Africa has been devastating – especially in Zimbabwe, Malawi and Lesotho. The number of people facing high levels of acute food insecurity between the 2023 peak and 29 August 2024 increased by over 2 million. Have a look at this chart.
At a South African farm, hundreds of ostriches stretch their slender necks and shake their black feathers under the setting sun. The birds' lanky legs raise a cloud of ochre dust in their enclosure, one of dozens dotting the rugged landscape surrounding the southern town of Oudtshoorn.

Maputo's market scene is experiencing a downturn with essential goods like potatoes and onions in short supply due to post-election unrest that has been ongoing for two months, disrupting imports from South Africa. The disturbances have stemmed from disputes over Mozambique's election results, leading to over 100 fatalities as reported by civil groups.
Agriculture is more than just food—it is the pillar of any nation’s economy, identity, and global relevance. “Everything is substitutable but not agriculture!” Yet, many African nations struggle to feed their people, import what they could produce, and rely on others to meet basic needs. How can we attract investments, foster partnerships, or demand respect when we fail to solve our agricultural challenges?
John Steenhuisen, Minister of Agriculture, said the directorate, with assistance from the Gauteng Illicit and Counterfeit Goods Unit of the South African Police Service, started at the end of November to inspect products labelled ‘honey-based syrup’ in Gauteng.
If President Cyril Ramaphosa wants one standout policy success to help address many of South Africa’s ills, he should give full backing to the campaign to remove value added tax (VAT) from chicken.
The latest health check on South Africa’s economy from this past week was a mixed bag for consumers as the latest data released on employment and inflation in the country made for both, good and alarming reading.
The push for BRICS is in recognition of two things. First, South African agriculture has low trade with BRICS countries. And yes, BRICS is not a trade bloc, but if trade could be deepened, South Africa's agriculture stands to benefit. The original BRICS members only account for 8% of South Africa's agricultural exports. Yet, the BRICS countries are big agricultural importers. The significant issues are higher import tariffs and phytosanitary barriers.

A Farmer's Plea: Understanding the Harsh Reality of Drought
If you haven't walked in the worn-out boots of a farmer, you can't begin to comprehend the relentless struggle of living with drought.
Have you ever invested your life savings into the earth, only to watch it wither away under the scorching sun? Have you endured the agony of waiting for rain that never comes, clinging to useless weather forecasts that promise hope but deliver nothing?
Have you faced the daunting task of appeasing creditors, who demand payment for seeds, fertilizers, and equipment, even as your crops shrivel and die? Do you know the feeling of desperation that grips your heart as you watch your livelihood disintegrate before your eyes?
If not, then you can't truly understand the devastating impact of drought on farmers, their families, and their communities.
Drought is more than just a lack of rain; it's a merciless thief that steals away your income, your security, and your sense of purpose. It's a constant reminder that, no matter how hard you work, you're always at the mercy of forces beyond your control.
So, before you offer solutions or sympathies, take a moment to walk in our shoes. Feel the weight of our worries, the depth of our despair, and the resilience of our spirit.
Only then can you begin to understand the true meaning of drought and the unyielding determination of those who face it head-on, season after season.
