NEWS- NUUS

Africa is embracing learning opportunities with enthusiasm, recognising the importance of knowledge in tackling industry challenges. According to Juliette Fourie, managing director and founder of Metro Minds, while the African logistics sector faces substantial hurdles in skills development, the commitment to education and training signals a promising future. “A major issue on the continent is the existing skills gap, where logistics companies struggle to find qualified professionals capable of navigating the complexities of supply chain management, transportation and warehousing,” she said. “This challenge is compounded by inadequate training infrastructure, as many African countries lack robust institutions offering specialised logistics courses, leading to a shortage of qualified trainers and facilities.”

Nedbank CSI has invested more than R100m in projects that have created 300 enterprises and 2,000 jobs across SA. Specialising in the area of impact investing, the unit finds small business in areas such as agriculture and water to allocate them capital of up to R500,000. This investment is used to find a “green” solution that can either help to make an operation more efficient or create new lines of revenue.   Through an ecosystem that resulted in other spaza shops and cooking operations selling on their used oil to her, the business has gone on to generate more than R1m a year. The operation had been in need of less than R200,000 from Nedbank. The bank’s criteria for investing, the types of businesses invested in, and various ways in which small businesses can use sustainability to improve their operations.

Despite the successes against global inflation, downside risks are rising and now dominate the October 2024 release of the IMF World Economic Outlook. Escalating regional conflicts and the genesis of signs of geopolitical trade blocks being the major drivers. The October 2024 Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) combined Food Price Index increased with 8.5% compared to February 2024. The Global Dairy Trade Index (GDT) in October 2024 is up by 19.4%, YoY. The lift in F.O.B. trade prices of dairy products provided some boost in farmgate prices in NZ, EU and the USA. In USD terms F.O.B. prices for all four dairy commodities registered increased prices for October 2024, butter up by 35.0%, Cheddar by 28.7%, FMP by 19.5% and SMP by 7.2% YoY. The ZAR/US$ exchange rate strengthened by 7.8% in October 2024 YoY, cushioning the Rand commodity price increases to a certain extend.

Namibia and Botswana placed a ban on the imports of South African vegetables and citrus.
