SA’s cane growers are overwhelmingly small-scale farmers. SA Canegrowers represents 24,000 small-scale growers and 1,200 commercial growers. Small-scale growers are often black women who grow cane on small tracts of land. These growers are often anchors in their rural communities in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga and already face many challenges. Losing these growers means they must become subsistence farmers, resort to crime, look for work outside their rural communities or rely on government grants to survive. A sugar tax that is not effective cannot in good conscience be the reason we destroy the social fabric of rural communities. Moreover, an increase in poverty strongly correlates with an increase in poor health so by increasing poverty the tax is driving likely worsening health outcomes.
Chicken prices are now 8% cheaper than a year ago, drawing back South African consumers who have opted for alternatives like offal and polony. This has helped the poultry industry, which said it is slowly starting to recover from the "historic" avian flu outbreak that cost it an estimated R9.5 billion, according to the South African Poultry Association (SAPA). The outbreak led to the culling of 9.5 million chickens and even egg shortages at South Africa's major retailers. Nearly a year after the outbreak, SAPA general manager Izaak Breitenbach said production levels have slowly started to return to normal for an industry valued at R50 billion, despite decreasing trade levels. During the outbreak, 20 million birds were slaughtered weekly. To date, that number of slaughters has increased to 21.5 million birds per week.

Wool production in South Africa, Argentina, NZ, and the UK, as the global production of wool is forecast to decline by over 2% for the coming year. The production of wool used in apparel has continuously fallen below the production volume of wool used in interior textiles. The gap between these two sectors is simple – income from meat and wool is better than just wool. READ MORE
India gave the go-ahead on Saturday for exports of non-basmati white rice to resume as inventories in the world's biggest exporter of the grain surge and farmers prepare to harvest a new crop in the coming weeks. Bigger rice shipments from India would beef up overall global supplies and soften international prices by forcing other major exporters of the staple such as Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam to reduce their rates, traders said.
