The prospect of a Donald Trump presidency in the White House looms like a portentous threat to global trade, and not for the first time either. Like him or loathe him, Trump is part of that rare breed who does what he says he will.   China will bear the brunt of his irrepressible fervour, and South Africa will probably lose preferential duty-free access for certain exports to the US, as protected under the African Growth and Opportunity Act. Amongst other things, Trump has promised to impose a 10% tariff on all goods entering the US and a 60% duty on all goods from China, except for Chinese cars, which will attract a 100% duty, even if they’re made in Mexico. If Trump imposed his 60% duty on China, this would add a cost of $269bn just for Chinese products. The balance of $2.7tn would attract $270bn in duties. Of course, all of this won’t manifest but I’m quite sure some will. South Africa sent $14bn to the US in 2023, with about a third of that under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa).

Standard Bank's analysis of the economic climate in South Africa suggests that the Reserve Bank may be poised to implement monetary easing measures. This potential shift is driven by a decline in inflation, which is expected to continue, creating a favourable environment for the central bank to consider cutting interest rates.  The goal of such a move would be to stimulate domestic market growth and create jobs, which are crucial for addressing the country's high unemployment rate, which in the first quarter of the year increased from 32.1% to 32.9%. The youth unemployment rate, for those aged 15 to 24 years, reached a staggering 59.7% in Q1, up from 59.4% in the previous quarter. According to data aggregator site, Statista, the unemployment rate is particularly high among Black South Africans, reaching 36.9% in Q1 this year, compared to 9.2% for white South Africans. Women also face higher unemployment rates than men, with the female unemployment rate close to 36% compared to 30% for men, Statista added. According to Trading Economics, the number of unemployed individuals in South Africa surged by 330 000 in Q1, reaching 8.2 million.

Autonomous machines are a potential game changer in crop farming, boosting productivity, precision, and ease of operations, but bringing them successfully to the market implies a long road. Although some robots have the same functionality as tractors, we do not expect the conventional tractor to be replaced anytime soon. The global agricultural machinery industry is currently focusing on innovating specific stages of the crop production cycle and gradually developing autonomous capabilities across field operations. The Citrus Growers' Association of Southern Africa (CGA) has written to the Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Dr Ivan Meyer, to request support for the farming communities in Citrusdal. This is the second major flood in the area in the last two years, as well as the third time in two years that the town has been completely cut off from the rest of the province due to road damaged caused by flooding.

As TLU SA looks forward to President Cyril Ramaphosa's address during the opening of the new parliament, the agricultural organisation wants to emphasise the necessity of applying stronger economic considerations and implementing sound principles for sustainable economic growth.

Five days have passed and the large citrus growing town of Citrusdal is still cut off from the rest of the Western Cape Province in South Africa. Citrus growers and members of the community are waiting on government authorities to make emergency plans to be able to access the town to bring much needed food, medical supplies etc.

The recent occurrence of extreme climatic events, including flooding, cold snap, excessive wind, and fires, has had a significant impact on agricultural production nationwide, leading to substantial damage to crops, livestock, and infrastructure.

Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) has suspended operations on the Cape Mainline after a section of the rail network washed away during stormy weather last week.TFR announced in a statement on Friday that all train operations on the Cape Mainline had been suspended due to wash-aways of the section between Worcester and De Doorns, caused by the inclement weather conditions affecting the Western Cape.

The trade relationship that South Africa has with the United States is entering a critical period in the coming weeks, as the new Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, navigates a complex geopolitical landscape.

South Africa’s president and transport minister have come out in support of the freight and trade industry as challenges continue to beset importers and exporters, holding back much-needed economic growth and its potential for job creation.

If you don't want water to become a crisis in your life, you need to understand this. What most people don't realize is how our actions on land are destroying the earth's natural water cycle. Land-use changes, such as deforestation, mining, and industrial growth, are the root cause of disturbing the delicate balance of our water cycle.

It’s not comforting that American politics is starting to feel like KwaZulu-Natal, after Thomas Matthew Crooks shot Donald Trump though the ear on Sunday, July 14. He also killed a member of the crowd and injured another before being killed by the Secret Service.

The South African wine industry has faced its fair share of challenges over the past few years. However, with challenges also come opportunities, and collaboration is essential if we want to grow sustainably and successfully. By forging strong partnerships with government and other industry bodies, the wine sector can tackle crucial issues ranging from policy certainty and investment confidence to export support and socio-economic development. This unified approach aims to create a robust framework that not only supports the immediate needs of the industry but also lays the foundation for a thriving, inclusive, and globally competitive future.
