The latest estimate from the Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) points to a maize crop of 15.51 million tons in 2020 – of which 9 million tons is white maize.
This will yield a projected exportable surplus for 2020/21 of just over a million tons of white maize, mostly destined for the rest of Southern Africa.
Despite exceeding the 3 year average for the equivalent time of year under lockdown level 3, export volumes remain well below pre-lockdown levels due to the reduction in export volumes during lockdown levels 4 and 5, and hampered by substantial delays at regional border posts.
