The United Nations food agency's world price index rose in April for the first time this year, but is still some 20% up on a record high hit in March 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The Food and Agriculture Organisation's (FAO) price index, which tracks the most globally traded food commodities, averaged 127.2 points last month against 126.5 for March, the agency said on Friday. The sugar price index surged 17.6% from March, hitting its highest level since October 2011. FAO said the rise was linked to concerns of tighter supplies following downward revisions to production forecasts for India and China, along with lower-than-earlier-expected outputs in Thailand and the European Union.

The Association of Meat Importers and Exporters (Amie) has supported the government’s move to reject the EU’s planned unilateral imposition of tariffs on carbon-intensive imported products such as poultry. “The potential impact of the EU’s decision will have a profound, and possibly debilitating effect on many, if not most, of its trading partners. While the EU will have its own various reasons for imposing tariffs, the imposition of tariffs (in any sphere) raises the costs of doing business, of job creation, lower foreign investment, and dampens the incentives for substantive local competition and innovation.
South Africa's only driver's licence printing machine has broken down and will only be fixed in two to three weeks' time, the Department of Transport announced on Wednesday. The department said the machine had broken down just after undergoing routine maintenance in April. "The routine maintenance started on 5 April”, lasting till 19 April. Another boo- boo from the ANC - According to the Automobile Association, the department has only one driving licence printing machine in a bid to prevent giving corrupt officials the opportunity to produce fraudulent licences.
The shortage of strategic vaccines in the livestock and animal industries has now caused a state of disaster in the red meat industry. " "Commercial and emerging producers are now suffering serious losses due to bluetongue outbreaks which cause up to 50% mortality among herds and African horse sickness among horses and donkeys which play a supporting role in the production process of red meat" says the Chairman of the national RPO, James Faber . Trading activity in the Urea market was very limited this week. Producers and traders with long positions were bullish on prices after the $30/t upward tick in prices over the last 3 weeks but buyers are well-aware that urea supply far exceeds demand and they can play the waiting game secure in the knowledge that product is available should they need it. Urea analysts are suggesting urea prices could be firm for the next few weeks until the next Indian urea tender comes out (which is expected to put severe downward pressure on the price) – we simply don’t see there being much support for prices currently. It will only take one producer to accept a $20/t discount to move a cargo and prices will come tumbling down. READ MORE

Former Eskom CEO Andre De Ruyter warned that widespread load-shedding exemptions would pose a serious and unacceptable risk of a national blackout, but a recent court ruling ignored his caution. On Friday, the North Gauteng High Court ruled hospitals, clinics, state schools, and police stations should not be subject to load-shedding. The former Eskom CEO explained that the exempted facilities are embedded in distribution networks containing other residential and non-residential loads. To exclude them from load-shedding, you must exclude the other customers who share those distribution networks. Who is going to SUFFER- The man who pay the bills- We all know that the ANC have never been an will not be in the future have the ability to govern South Africa- People need to except that they do not have the skills to buildt, manage or govern- It seems that they are very clever in corruption- because that is all we see.

Johann Pretorius.
Women in agriculture deserves recognition. These women are in most cases graduated or with some form of post-school tertiary qualification and a leader in hear community, church, at the local school, clinic and plays a role in keeping the daily activities on the farm, running.A Women who forms part of the decision making on the farm, support her husband to adapt to the changes in weather, government rules, managing the finances of the farm as a business.A Women who offers an input before agricultural meetings and conferences. This Women has a direct input in the management of the farm and allows her husband to be a farmer and allows him to farm. A Women without a platform to raise her own voice. The reality is that men as farmers compete in competitions, wins luxury vehicles and invited to international agricultural trade and study tours, but never such an opportunity for women in agriculture.

The 2023 veld fire season could potentially develop into one of the most problematic fire seasons in recent memory. According to a statement issued by the Free State Umbrella Fire Protection Association (FSUFPA), one of the reasons for this was the abundant rain during the past three summers that resulted in a very high moribund biomass fuel load.

South African mango orchards are currently in the postharvest maintenance phase, the first flowering will be in roughly a month’s time in Hoedspruit. The very last mangoes are now coming from the Western Cape, where (along with the Eastern cape) there’s increased interest in producing late mangoes as some look at alternatives to citrus.
South African poultry producer Astral Foods has warned investors of a decline of as much as 92% in earnings for the six months to 31 March, as the impact of load shedding hits food producers countrywide.

Roodt made these comments in an interview on Newzroom Afrika, where he outlined his expectations for interest rates.
South Africans may not experience citrus fruit shortages this winter, but continuous loadshedding is putting the electricity-dependent citrus industry under a lot of strain, thus impacting both farmers and consumers.

’n Sterk negatiewe reënvalsein is duidelik vanaf November.
