Transforming how countries produce and finance food in ways that protect both nature and poor farmers will be one of the biggest challenges of a landmark global deal to halt biodiversity loss agreed late last year, said UN officials who led the process. At the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP 15) in Montreal in December, about 195 countries adopted ambitious targets to halt and reverse harm to plants, animals and ecosystems, while respecting the rights of indigenous peoples. People around the world depend on nature — from oceans to rainforests — to supply them with clean air and water, and to regulate rainfall that is vital for growing food crops.

The UK government’s environment improvement plan pledges to restore 500,000 hectares (1.2 million acres) of wildlife-rich habitat, create or expand 25 national parks, invest in the recovery of hedgehogs and red squirrels, tackle rising sewage pollution and improve access to green spaces in England over the next five years. Since 69% of land in England is farmed, much of the plan’s success in improving nature will hinge on its reform of the country’s agricultural sector. Farming is implicated in the extinction risk of 86% of threatened species globally, and accounts for roughly one-third of all greenhouse gas emissions driving climate change, not to mention soil erosion and river pollution.  Intensive agriculture has slashed the amount of carbon soils store by 60% and put 6 million hectares across England and Wales at risk of erosion or compaction, costing an estimated £1.2 billion a year.

Ejiao is made from collagen that’s been extracted from donkey hides mixed with herbs and other ingredients to create medicinal and health consumer products. It’s believed to have properties that strengthen the blood, stop bleeding and improve the quality of both vital fluids and sleep. Peter Setou, Chief Executive of the Vumelana Advisory Fund says, “Land reform should remain a priority government imperative, as it is a fundamental part of the economy and prerequisite element to addressing South Africa’s history of land dispossession and the subsequent challenges that the country currently faces.” “We have noted the president's positive announcements regarding support for small-scale farmers, including the supply of input vouchers for seeds, fertiliser, and equipment to 140 000 farmers to boost food security and agricultural reform on over 640 000 hectares of land owned by women,” Setou says. South Africa’s economy is increasingly vulnerable to a recession in the next 12 months, with an ongoing electricity crisis seen further curbing activity. The probability of a recession stands at 68%, up from odds of 45% in January, according to Bloomberg’s latest monthly survey of economists.

While Agri SA welcomes the President’s focus on the electricity crisis in his State of the Nation Address, the sector remains deeply concerned about the ongoing and devastating impact of loadshedding on the agricultural sector. We further question the necessity and value of the declaration of a National State of Disaster to address the crisis.

People across the world worry about climate change, but that concern alone doesn’t translate into support for climate mitigation policies. That’s our finding based on a recent survey designed to better illustrate how people perceive the risks from climate change and their support for government climate actions.

In an updated forecast released on Feb. 3, the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimated 2022 wheat production at a record 794 million tonnes, due to upward revisions in Australia and Russia, while overall grains production was pegged at 2.76 million tonnes, a 1.7% decline over the 2021 output.
