ESKOM -
Stage 6 load shedding and the recent decision by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) to increase the price of electricity pose a significant risk to SA agriculture, economists and those in the industry warn. Hikes in an industry heavily reliant on electricity across its value chain could lead to an impact on food prices and food security within the country. Nersa has granted Eskom an 18.65% and 12.7% tariff increase in 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 respectively. Load shedding could also lead to an increase in food prices for South African consumers. Potatoes can no longer be produced at a wider range, which means that fresh potatoes were fed into the market and sold at a lower price than usual, which could impact profitability. "When producers cannot produce effectively, it is the consumers that bear the brunt, particularly those of a lower income and their ability to access food. Stakeholders in the agricultural sector met with the Department of Agriculture on Friday morning to propose a new way forward. The demands included listing agriculture as an essential service and that lower stages of load shedding should be implemented, according to Krapohl. In a statement issued by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development on Friday evening, Minister Thoko Didiza said the meeting earlier in the day had resolved that a sector task team would be established comprising government, industry participants and energy specialists to "continuously monitor the impact of load shedding in the sector, and its ability to provide safe and nutritious food to South Africans".
The gross agricultural value added for 2022, which will be released in March, will probably show a mild contraction. This would be a notable shift from two consecutive years of solid growth, with the sector expanding by 14,9% y/y in 2020 and 8,8% y/y in 2021. Mild declines in critical crop harvests such as maize, production challenges in the sugar industry, trade friction in fruits, vegetables, beef and wool, and widespread foot-and-mouth disease weighed on the sector's performance this year. Ammonia prices also moved sharply down, with the Middle East price dropping by more than $100/t and now trading below $800/t. With ammonia being a key raw material for ammonium phosphate production, this price reduction improves economics for MAP and DAP producers. The question is whether lower input costs starts to drag MAP and DAP prices down just as they have seemed to be stabilising. READ MORE
The agricultural industry looks much different today than it did hundreds of years ago. Mechanization changed agriculture’s reliance on human labor and horsepower. The Green Revolution harnessed selective breeding allowing more grain to be produced per acre. Over the past few years, this change has continued, with an increasing focus on sustainability worldwide, changing farming policies to support this, and an increasing spotlight on digital agricultural tools to bring this change about. Hardest hit is the most energy-intensive part of that chain: the glass industry. Soaring natural gas costs have already driven up the price of bottles to producers by 20% or more. Further bottle price hikes of up to 70% have been forecast by this Spring, though some of the price pressure in European gas markets has eased in recent months. READ MORE -

In December 2022, South Africa’s new-vehicle industry registered its twelfth consecutive month of year-on-year sales growth, capping a year defined by its steady recovery to just short of pre-pandemic levels. The final month of 2022 saw total new-vehicle sales in the country grow an encouraging 16.2% year on year to 41 783 units, according to Naamsa.
The supply of grapes on many markets is tight at the moment, for a number of reasons. A number of large producing countries have started their season late this year, particularly Peru and South Africa. The political unrest in Peru has been the cause of this for some countries, including the US, as it brought some growing operations to a standstill.

South Africa exported 44 879 tonnes of maize in the last week. About 38% to Mexico, 28% to Italy, and the rest to the Southern Africa region. This placed SA maize exports for 2022/23 at 2,4 million tonnes out of the seasonal export forecast of 3,4 million.
The harvesting of the second grain crop of the joint agricultural project that was undertaken by AfriForum, Saai and the Boiphitlhelelo Co-operative of Noga’s Post in the Barolong Boo Seleka Kingdom was completed this week. 8,5 tonne wheat was harvested and delivered to OVK Tweespruit.
Maize: The January World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report slashed global corn production by about 9 million tons. The severe drought in Argentina persists and continues to cause crop damage. The SAFEX prices of white and yellow maize decreased by 5.9% and 6.2% compared to a month ago.
To overcome issues such as climate change, supply chain disruptions, geopolitical tensions, and rising food prices, agri-food companies, governments, and farmers are increasingly adopting technology to shape the future of food systems. In 2023, it is crucial to keep an eye on the following technology trends in the industry.
Weekly rebound in beef carcass prices likely temporary -Beef: After a decrease in carcass prices in the weeks after Christmas, a strong rebound in prices was apparent during the first week of January. This is likely the result of lower supply as animals available for slaughter is lower after the festive period.
A new report predicts South Africa’s hydrogen economy could add between $3.9bn and $8.8bn to the country’s GDP by 2050. Not to mention thousands of jobs. Solar panels, wind turbines and lithium-ion batteries are setting the world on course towards a clean energy future. But to accelerate the pace of change and avert a climate catastrophe, more needs to be done.
In the orchards of Ceres Cascade Farms in Prince Alfred Hamlet, where it is not unusual to see all manner of wild buck undisturbed by orchard activities, the stone fruit harvest is firing on all cylinders for the next two months, says Pietie Wolfaardt, owner of Ceres Cascade Farms.
Jeff Schultz, senior economist at BNP Paribas South Africa, said they expect the country’s growth to be far below consensus. The Reserve Bank forecasts 1.4% economic growth in 2023, while Investec predicts the country’s GDP to grow at just above 1.0% next year.

Laat 'n mens so bietjie dink of hoe?
Dus of dieselfde prys asof jy 24 uur krag het. So jy betaal meer vir minder krag so waar jy 720 (R1500) uur se krag gebruik betaal het, betaal jy nou presies dieselfde bedrag of meer vir 495 (R1500) ure se krag gebruik
So 24 uur se krag = R2.083
Is it OVERCOME ???? Dear Mr President
This is what your president says to the international community in your absence.
