Despite trade policy uncertainty and higher US tariffs, South Africa’s agricultural exports remain robust, reaching US$11.7 billion in the first three quarters of 2025 — a solid 10% increase year-on-year.Third-quarter exports alone hit US$4.7 billion (+13% y/y), driven by strong volumes and better prices for citrus, nuts, apples, pears, maize, wine, sugar, fruit juices, berries, grapes, avocados, and soybeans.Regional breakdown (Q3 2025):Africa: 34% (maize, wheat, fruit juices, wine, sugar, live animals) Asia & Middle East: 25% (citrus, wool, beef, berries, grapes) EU: 23% (citrus, wine, grapes, nuts, fruit juices) Americas: 6% (mainly citrus, wine, nuts) — with exports to the US cooling 11% to US$144 million after front-loading during the 90-day tariff pause Rest of world (incl.

Grain SA has warned that South Africa’s wheat industry has reached a critical turning point amid soaring input costs, low international prices and an import tariff system that, according to the organisation, no longer reflects market realities.A new wheat import tariff of R616 per ton was gazetted yesterday (27 November 2025) after Sagis initiated the Government Gazette process. This follows a joint submission in October by Grain SA and the grain and oilseed trading association Sacota to the International Trade Administration Commission (Itac) in support of an earlier June 2024 application for an updated reference price and an automatic trigger mechanism. In a statement, Grain SA described the current operating conditions as a crisis that demands immediate intervention.

Despite producing an abundance of food, most U.S. farm households lose money on farming in a typical year and rely on off-farm jobs to stay afloat; the USDA estimates median farm income was negative in both 2023 and 2024. At the same time, biodiversity warnings are flashing red. READ MORE -

The findings challenge decades-old assumptions. Biologists have long known that a lion’s roar helps advertise territory, attract mates and locate pride members — and that a complete roaring bout begins with moans and ends with grunts. But everything in the middle was treated as a single, undifferentiated roar. READ MORE

NEWS  COMMENTARY- DR FAFFA
South Africa’s long-awaited La Niña rains have finally arrived in full force, but the timing is brutal. Summer-grain areas are waterlogged: maize planting windows have closed, soybeans are late, tractors are stuck, and drones are the only way to spray. In the Western Cape, wheat harvest is delayed and drowning; waterlogging threatens sprouting, fungus, and mycotoxins.Dams are overflowing, flood warnings are out, and optimism from Grain SA and Agbiz feels thin when quality is at risk. Once again, South African farming proves that weather is never just weather; it’s survival on steroids.La Niña in one line: Great for dams, terrible for fieldwork and harvest windows.Climate change angle: More extreme swings (drought one year, floods the next) are the new normal, hitting Africa’s smallholders hardest and demanding faster adoption of resilient seed, insurance, and tech.
The soil is happy, the farmers are nervous, and the bill for “too much rain” always comes when the sun finally returns.

The ban on US chicken imports is likely to impact the livelihoods of thousands of farmers and workers in the industry, and may also lead to a shortage of chicken supplies in South Africa.

The Department of Agriculture has fired back at "misleading" claims by the Transvaal Agricultural Union of South Africa (TLU SA) that the registration system under the Fertilisers,

South Africa’s 2025/26 winter crop harvest is tracking at a solid 2.76 million tonnes — only 0.5% lower than last month’s estimate and still 4% higher than the previous season.Wheat, the dominant crop, is expected to reach 2.03 million tonnes (+5% y/y), with almost half (960,378 tonnes) already delivered to silos since October.

South Africa already sends 44% of its agricultural exports into the rest of Africa, making the continent the country’s top market. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is poised to supercharge this intra-African trade, but real progress depends far less on tariff cuts (which are mostly in place) and far more on fixing three critical bottlenecks.

At the penultimate mohair auction of the 2025 winter season in Port Elizabeth, 123,155 kg was offered and 96% sold, with 87% of the high-quality clips carrying RMS certification. Strong competition drove the average price to R362.91 per kg – unchanged from the previous sale – while a bale of super-style 25-micron kid mohair fetched a top price of R950 per kg.

Drones and tractors are becoming essential tools in modern agriculture. They help farmers save time, reduce labor, and work more efficiently in the field.Drones make it easier to check crop health, map fields, and monitor pests without walking long distances. Tractors help with plowing, planting, spraying, and harvesting faster than manual work.

South Africa’s sugar industry is facing an existential crisis as record-high imports of heavily subsidised foreign sugar flood the local market. SARS data shows 153,344 tons entered the country from January to September 2025 – more than seven times the volume imported in 2020 and almost three times the previous record set in 2024.

South Africa's agricultural exports for the first three quarters of the year is US$11.7 billion, up 10% year-on-year-The final production estimate for South Africa’s 2024-25 summer grains and oilseeds production season. South Africa has a harvest of 20.2 million tonnes.

South African fertilizer prices eased again this week, led by a 5.1% drop in granular urea to R7,881/t after India unexpectedly accepted over 1.5 million tons in its latest tender at prices that pulled global benchmarks lower. Nitrogen now costs R17.13/kg (-5.1% w/w), while MAP and KCl each slipped 0.5% to R13,319/t and R6,848/t respectively.Despite the large Indian offtake removing significant surplus tonnage and tightening the supply-demand balance, the market chose to read the lower tender price as bearish, driving Middle East urea FOB down more than $20 to around $400/t and forward swaps lower. Analysts at F Curve believe the sell-off is overdone and expect a rebound toward $430–450/t from January once US and European demand returns strongly.Phosphates remain weak with no demand recovery in sight; Brazil MAP CFR is sliding toward $640/t and US DAP has fallen below $700/t now that tariffs have been lifted. Prices are forecast to keep drifting lower through December, with no real upturn expected before mid-2026.Potash is flat after China surprisingly settled its 2026 contract only $2/t higher than 2025, interpreted more as stock-rebuilding urgency than a bullish signal. Brazil soya applications are well behind normal, keeping South American demand soft.Energy markets are calmer, Brent crude is hovering just above $62/bbl and European natural gas has plunged below $10/MMBtu on easing Russia-Ukraine tensions, while the rand held steady around R17.15 to the dollar.Bottom line: short-term sentiment is negative and dragging prices lower, but fundamentals (especially for nitrogen) look increasingly supportive for a sharper recovery early in 2026. January and February urea swaps are currently seen as attractive buying opportunities.
