-Welcome to our world- the real world of Farming and Agriculture in South Africa- Local and International news-

This AGRI NEWS RUSH -Some of the news stories of this week-, SUNDAY EDITIONALWAYS ON TIME  -

News Comments  - Internationally shared - Nothing Sensational.  News platform of the real commercial farmers of South Africa .

Just that " ONE" step ahead-  Always on time- 7 days of the week - 365 days of the year- This commitment.

It's already a hot summer in South Africa and it will continue to be a hot summer, with late and below-average rainfall expected in most parts of the country. This will affect animals, crops and water supply, as well as weather-related health conditions. It's been so hot that in the first 10 days of December, a number of temperature records were set. In Hartbeespoort, a new maximum record of 42.1°C was set on 4 December, beating a previous record of 40.9°C set on 26 December 2018, while in Lanseria, a record that stood for nearly 10 years was broken on 4 December when temperatures reached 37°C, from a previous high of 36.7°C.  n Marken, Limpopo, another record that stood for nine years was broken on 4 December when maximum temperatures reached 41°C. Meanwhile, in Bethlehem in the Free State, a record that stood since December 2015 was broken twice in a space of five days, with the new record set at 36.4°C and then 37.4°C on 9 December. "Some areas have experienced a heatwave for nearly two weeks, far exceeding the typical duration of three to five days," meteorologist at Vox Weather Annette Botha says. The recent heatwave was most intense in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West, Free State, Northern Cape and parts of Gauteng, she adds. Dhesigen Naidoo, a senior climate researcher at the ISS, says that "humans are not designed to function at temperatures in the 30s or even above".

A slight reduction in global grains production is expected in 2024-25 due to downward revisions in corn and wheat outturn, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. In its latest monthly forecast, released on Dec. 6, the FAO projected global grains output to fall by 0.6% year on year to 2.841 billion tonnes, which still would be the second largest ever. The FAO pegged global corn production at 1.217 billion tonnes, slightly lower than its forecast in October and about 2% below last year’s total. The decline primarily is driven by lower-than-expected yields in the European Union and the United States, the Rome-based organization said.Global wheat output also was revised lower in November to 789 million tonnes, which would equal the 2023-24 outturn.“The bulk of the month-on-month decrease is linked to a lower wheat estimate in the European Union, where overly wet conditions curbed yields in parts,” the FAO said.Rice output was virtually unchanged from the October report and is projected to increase by 0.8% from the previous year to a record 538.8 million tonnes (milled basis), the FAO said.Global grains consumption will continue its uptick in 2024-25, according to the FAO, rising by 1.8 million tonnes month on month to 2.859 billion tonnes, which would be 0.6% higher than the previous year. Sparking the monthly increase was an upward revision of 1.2 million tonnes in coarse grains utilization.

Earth’s inner core, a solid metal ball gyrating within the molten outer core, may be both slowing down and changing shape. Recent analyses of earthquake waves have suggested that around 15 years ago, the inner core’s rotation may have slowed so much that it appeared to pause or reverse direction relative to the surface. But a new analysis suggests something more must be changing at Earth’s center. READ MORE

At the time, the Botswana government said it was probably cyanobacterial toxins, though direct evidence remained elusive. Crop production in South Africa is overshadowed by storm clouds, and not the type that farmers crave. A multitude of uncertainties combine to darken prospects for the country’s crop farmers, which include climate change, water shortages, soil degradation, disease, economic instability and infrastructure and energy restrictions.

Bioenergy – the renewable energy derived from plant and animal waste products – is largely ignored in South Africa. Solar energy, wind power, and green hydrogen attract most investment in renewable energy.

The average banana price decreased and traded on R13.24 per kilogram or R238 per 18kg box and is now 5% higher than a year ago. We still expect prices to remain on a relatively higher level until the end of the year due to supply that can remain under pressure, but it can dip in January.
