On September 19, the International Research Institute for Climate and Society at Columbia University presented an update of its seasonal weather outlook, which remained somewhat unchanged from the previous month’s outlook. By this, I mean there is over 60% chance of El Niño developing over the 2018-2019 summer season. This corroborated the message shared on September 11 by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology which indicated a 50% chance of El Niño developing.

High volumes of imported oranges in the U.S. market over recent months have been reflected in market prices.

Chile, which has shipped 96% of its oranges to the North American country, saw a 13% rise in volumes this year through August to a record 74,182 metric tons (MT). This marks a significant rise from the 2015 season when just 48,470MT were exported.

South Africa will have almost doubled its avocado exports compared to last season by the time the 2018 export harvest comes to an end in October.

It has also become clear that the days of the South African export crop varying between 11m and 14m cartons is over. In future the volume harvested in 2018 could become the norm, with future growth expected.
