According to recent research published by the Agricultural Business Chamber, the increased cost is the biggest impact on South Africa's agri-businesses due to load shedding, with food producers having to spend large amounts of money to run diesel generators. This, in turn, has a knock-on effect on food prices, with many staple foods becoming unaffordable for poorer households. With the poverty and unemployment rates already at staggeringly high levels in South Africa, a huge portion of the population was already food insecure. Food price inflation driven by load shedding will only add to this problem, with an increasing number of people now facing the prospect of going hungry. Load shedding is critically having an adverse effect on the production costs of grains such as maize, wheat and soybeans, resulting in higher prices for grain products like maize and bread.

The apartheid government had left the ANC with a crippling debt crisis. Tito Mboweni, former governor of the South African Reserve Bank, has alluded to this crisis in a speech given in 2004. He explained the “crisis” faced by South Africa that resulted in then finance minister Derek Keys approaching the IMF for funding: “One of the problems/constraints facing the economy at that time was that the country only had foreign reserves to cover for plus/minus three weeks of imports.” The result was that the government approached the IMF for funding, to be channelled through the Compensatory and Contingency Financing Facility. Mboweni concedes that the IMF required the TEC to sign a statement on economic policy which was no more than a commitment to follow a “prudent” macroeconomic strategy.  Tembeka Ngcukaitobi

South Africa has created a network of facilities to store hundreds of thousands of samples of biological material from plants, animals, bacteria and fungi. The samples are currently held in biobanks in the country. The aim is twofold: to ensure researchers have access to all available samples, and to establish common policies, procedures and standards for biodiversity biobanks. This is important if the country is to keep pace with advances in research.

Almost a quarter of a billion people are now at risk of hunger as conflict, drought and flooding combined to wreak havoc on farms and food supply chains in 2022, according to the latest report. The proportion of people experiencing highest levels of acute food insecurity globally rose from 108 million in 2016 to around 258 million in 2022, representing nearly 140 per cent increase, the Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC) 2023 says. Some people have suggested that genetically modified wheat—also known as GMO wheat—might be to blame for these increases. However, the truth is that GMO wheat can't possibly be blamed for the hikes in celiac disease and gluten sensitivity, simply because GMO wheat isn't being grown commercially. READ MORE

A review of 1,000 articles found that the vast majority –  93 percent – fail to mention animal agriculture. The qualitative research, led by Faunalytics and the non-profit news organization Sentient Media, highlights a glaring omission when it comes to public understanding of the role livestock farming plays in the climate crisis. The relationships built within the government in particular have proven invaluable in times of crisis, such as the July 2021 unrest and the floods of April 2022. After these devastating events the industry was able to work with the government to mobilise much-needed relief. There has also been good progress in the effort to cultivate a sustainable aviation fuels industry in the country.  READ MORE

Petrol is showing an over-recovery of between 11 and 19 cents per litre, while diesel is showing the opposite in a range of 14 to 19 cents per litre. Analysts have noted that changes to the self-adjusting slate levy might limit the decrease in prices when they take effect from Wednesday, 5 July – but for now, a cut is still on the cards for petrol. Local petrol prices are benefiting from a stronger rand, which has fallen below R19 to the dollar. On Monday, the unit settled around R18.65 to the dollar, the same levels at the close of the week, and reflected in the latest CEF data.
