The Tshwane fresh produce market was well on its way to meeting the R30 billion (€1.87 bln) turnover target set for 2025 by the metro’s former mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa.
“The Tshwane fresh produce market is on the road to recovery boasting a turnover of approximately R3 billion (€186 mln) per annum,” the current mayor and DA Gauteng premier candidate Solly Msimanga said. Msimanga’s remarks follow after he conducted an in-situ inspection at the country’s second largest market last week.
Msimanga said he was still determined to create a business environment that promoted economic development and growth so the metro’s economy could grow and more employment created.
Rekordmoot.co.za further quoted Msimanga as saying: “The fresh produce market provides a central market distribution system primarily for the city and the rest of South Africa and the neighbouring countries. In the execution of this role as the central distribution system for Tshwane, the market strives to ensure enhancement of food security and food safety by attracting fresh produce from various producers including promotion of small-scale farmers within the city and regular compliance testing.”
He said the most notable progress at the market included:
– All potholes on the road surface have been repaired
– Provision of twenty 240 liter bins to clear illegal dumping
– Repairs to lifts, buildings and public toilets
– Repairs to internal and external lights in trading halls
– Provision of thermal rolls
– Painting trading halls
– Repairs and maintenance to generators
